I placed my order today for the Schiit Audio Yggdrasil DAC. Actually, I placed a special order for the Yggdrasil in black. I have been told there is a possibility they may not be able to accommodate my request for black. It depends on what their metal shop can produce. Since the black Yggy is a matte black paint rather than a black anodizing process, I am hoping it is just a phone call to the metal shop to make it happen. It doesn't seem like that tall of an order, but what do I know. It seems to me a simple request that can be completed quite easily. In the spirit of Christmas my hope is Schiit can make it happen.

In case Schiit cannot fill my order for a black Yggdrasil they said my order would be canceled and I would be notified. If that happens, I will have to decide whether or not I want to live with the silver one. Obviously the color of the enclosure makes no difference to the DAC's performance, only the aesthetics of the DAC in my rack with my other gear. I don't have a clue about how long this may take so I am in a holding pattern with my fingers crossed.
The Yggdrasil sure looks nice in black.

Looks better in black, I think and I usually prefer silver components. Good luck and congratulations!

Dan I hope the black color works out for you! It is a great DAC and should serve you very well.

The Yggdrasil sure looks nice in black.

Did you ask them if they could put blue lights and meter on it?

Congrats, new audio toys is always a cause for celebration.

I have reconsidered my color choice. I contacted Schiit Audio and changed my order to a silver Yggdrasil. I am more partial to the smooth silver anodized finish than the texture of the black matte paint finish. I also think the silk screen nomenclature will have greater legibility on the smoother silver surface. A silver component did not disturb me when I had an Esoteric K-03 installed in the living room rack so I am confident I will be comfortable with a silver Yggdrasil DAC. The performance is far more important to me than the color.

I would also like to report that the customer support at Schiit Audio is first rate. My emails, and there were several, were all answered in a friendly and timely manner. Changing my Yggdrasil to a silver one presented no problems and was handled efficiently. A big thumbs up to the good folks at Schiit Audio.

Dan, Congrats. Just out of curiosity, What made you to choose the Schiit Yggdrasil DAC over all others ? Have you heard it ? if so, what was special about this DAC ?

Paul.......My experience with Schiit Audio DAC's is strictly vicarious at this point. I have several friends who own the Yggdrasil and a couple others who own the Gungnir (Gumby) multibit ladder DAC. Each of them has remarkable praise for the richness, musical integrity, the rightness of voice and instruments, and the three dimensional characteristics of the sound stage. I have not personally auditioned the Yggdrasil in any of their sound systems but I respect their experience and wisdom. In addition, I have researched the Yggdrasil and read every word I could find. I did not find a disparaging comment, only astonished praise for a DAC that just seems to do it right recreating believable lifelike analog sound. It is not a total act of blind faith to make this purchase since Schiit Audio offers a 15 day audition period from the time I receive the DAC to return it for a refund, less 5% and return shipping.

I don't know if you read The Absolute Sound (TAS) but I have read the publication for many years. The Editor-in-Chief is Robert Harley, a well respected audio publisher and reviewer. When RH reviews an audio component he is often difficult to please. In the Schiit Yggdrasil DAC review (May/June 2017 issue) Harley stated, "If you're looking for a DAC that does quad-rate DSD, decodes MQA, offers a volume control, and includes a headphone amp, look elsewhere. But if the very best reproduction of PCM sources is your goal, the Yggdrasil is the ticket. It's a spectacular performer on an absolute level, and an out-of-this-world bargain. The Yggy is not just a tremendous value in today's DAC's, it's one of the greatest bargains in the history of high-end audio." That is serious praise from a seasoned Editor-n-Chief.

As for the Schiit Yggdrasil DAC, I want the opportunity to try a multibit ladder DAC instead of a chip based delta sigma DAC for a change. I am intent on trying a R2R ladder DAC. The Yggdrasil DAC has received rave reviews, is routinely compared to DAC's in the $12K and up price range, and everyone who has one swears it is more musically satisfying than any delta sigma DAC they have owned. I want to discover what the Yggdrasil has to offer for myself. Not to be overlooked, the Schiit Yggdrasil DAC is just $2299.00, made in the USA, and is supported with a five year warranty. I am excited to put this DAC together with my Aurender N100H music server. By all accounts it should be a remarkable experience.

Congrats Dan. I got to experience this DAC for several hours up against the mighty DCS Vivaldi 2.0. The Yggy DAC held it's own, moving the performers more forward into the room. It ultimately got beat in a number of other areas by the much much much much more expensive DCS, but the Yggy is no slouch and a steal at its price point. For a PCM only DAC, it really excels at redbook and hi res pcm.

I was more than impressed with the customer support provided me by Laura Z at Schiit Audio. A perfect example is the email correspondence we had last night. There is a three hour time difference from my Florida location and their California location. My initial email to Laura asking to change my Yggy from black to silver was at 9:56 PM my time. I didn't expect a response until this morning but in just over 30 minutes Laura emailed me back to let me know my request had been taken care of. Then late last night at 12:50 AM my time I decided to email Laura again, thinking she would see the email this morning. To my utter surprise she responded back at 1:13 AM my time. In my book that is exceptional customer service. Kudos to Schiit Audio's team.

See the emails below. All email time stamps are Pacific Standard Time so add three hours to equal Eastern Standard Time for my location.

Hi Laura,

I have reconsidered my color choice and have decided I prefer the silver Yggdrasil instead of the black. Kindly let me know you have received this email, deleted the special order for black, and are able to ship a silver Yggdrasil to complete this order.
