For my digital front end, I have been thinking of running the following:

- Music downloads/streams & podcasts from a Macbook to a Gungnir (via USB)
- CD's from an Oppo 203 to Gungnir (via coaxial or optical)

Given my tasks and budget (~$1,300), is there anything else I should be considering?

Only other DAC I would recommend from personal experience under 2k is the Ayre Codex. But with your budget it would have to be used.

A bit more money than $1300 but the new Chord Qutest should be a great DAC.

The MP-D2 Mk II should also do everything he is looking for in CD to S/PDIF and Macbook to USB. The Border Patrol also a great choice.

Jack,

I would absolutely get another MP-D2 dac but for some reason, it would not lock onto the 24/96 output of my modified Sonos via coax/spdif. Testing with a cd player, no problem. Using the Toslink output at 24/96 was working fine, but I tend to shy away from using Toslink.

Best I can tell that is a hit or miss thing and I had a similar problem when I experimented with a 24/96 MQA file using the coax input. In Sean's case that might not be an issue. For you and the Sonos the BP would be the better bet. I've only seen on SE version for sale and it lasted about a day.

Thanks everyone. I’ll be looking into all of these. Kind of stinks the Border Patrol charges for both inputs.
