I ordered everything to build two Roon Rock servers. One for me and one for a friend. I am a little bit of a geek but hate getting my hands dirty as I get older. There’s tons of information and YouTube videos out there, especially one from Computer Audiophile that’s extremely helpful.

I use Windows and Macintosh computers with access to both and that was actually a huge benefit in the build.

Wow! It was a fun and actually very easy project. Sound is the best yet for me. It’s feeding my PS Audio DirectStream DAC with zero hiccups and wonderful control over my own music and superb integration with Tidal.

I think Mike said it was shipping now but I have not seen anyone talk about getting one. Maybe I jumped the gun but I’m super happy with my results.

Your library, Tidal and the overall integration is wonderful with Roon.

Joe
I am glad you got Roon up and running. I found running Roon Core hardwired was better than wirelessly even though I had no dropout issues. I was actually considering going the way you went until it was suggested I avoid Windows and go with a Linux based unit. This route also allowed me to avoid purchasing a mouse and keyboard for installation.

Hi Jim,

The Intel nuc is running Roon Rock, a streamlined version of Linux. It’s all controlled from your iPad or iPhone. You can remotely update, shutdown or access the nuc.

I know. I purchased the sonicTransporter version with 2TB SS drive. I didn't want to deal with setting it up.

Ah, yes, I didn’t realize. I was about to buy one for the same reason then another friend did this and convinced me. Was actually easier than I thought once everything was in front of me and I’d play the videos if I was a little stuck.

Hi Joe

Would like to find out if there is any improvements? Very tempted to move my current Roon server from my Synology nas

I think with my new Intel/Roon Rock server, this is the best that I have heard from my music and Tidal through my system. I have not done an exhaustive comparison and my PS Audio DAC has recently been updated, but it's pretty exciting how easy and wonderful it sounds. I highly recommend it.

I'm also using PS Audio DS :) How are you connecting to it ? I'm currently using the Bridge II.

Same way. One network cable to the Rock server and one network cable to the Bridge II. Pick the PS Audio dac and enable it in the Roon menu and it off to the races.

Nice build Joe. I am not surprised by the improvement in sound. I just built a new windows based headless desktop dedicated audio computer to replace my dedicated audio laptop. It made a huge improvement in sound. The extremely low ripple power supply probably accounts for the much improved clarity and detail. I run my music player on it and control it with Windows remote desktop. I thought about going the Nuc route but I like building things from scratch.

Congrats!

Larry

Thank you Larry. It was fun and rewarding at the same time.

I was curious seeing you guys mention Roon version 1.4 and worried about how I’d go about getting mine updated. When I got home tonight, I opened my Roon remote on my iPhone, there was a pop up stating it that there’s an update. I gave it the go ahead and maybe 30 seconds later it rebooted, updated the database and I was up running version 1.4 in no time. Wow! Homerun for sure. Love it.
