Anyone have any thoughts or experience with the Red Dragon Audio M500MkII or M1000MkII? Or, any thoughts/experience with any of the B&O ICEpower or Hypex NCore powered amplifiers - Bel Canto, Jeff Rowland, Wyred 4 Sound, NAD, NuForce, etc.?

Thanks,

C

I have only heard the Red Dragon Leviathan mono blocks. They are quite expensive. They were hooked up to the Acoustic Zen Crescendos. I thought they both sounded great together. It made me order the Crescendo's. Since I have SS amps, it helped hearing the Crescendo's on the Red Dragon SS amps.

I've owned or heard a number of B&O ICEpower amps over the years.

Firstly, it pays to choose an amp that does not just use the stock module but at least provide some form of customisation on the input side. In stock form, the ICEpower module has fairly low input impedance that makes it difficult to pair with preamps with a highish output impedance (usually tube based preamps).

Secondly, the choice of module itself is quite important. Listening to the latest generation module (125asx2) as compared to the ASP500, I find the latest module sweeter and more three dimensional. The older modules have a tendency to have more one dimensional bass and dry upper treble.

The first amp I owned just used the ASP1000 module in stock form. Good but not inspiring. I trialled the old Bel Canto s300i about 6-7 years ago. Similar performance but in a much lower powered version. Bought a Virtue Audio M5001 ICEBlock that used a Dodd tube buffer - much, much better. Had a short spin with the Calyx Femti that uses the 125asx2 module - nice and sweet.

Right now I have a pair of the current version Bel Canto Ref 500M sitting in storage. Haven't had time to try them out yet, but will report back when I do give it a shot.

Hi Cory,

I use to frequent the Lounge but don't believe in Big Dan's idea of an entry level table. It just doesn't make sense to cut so many corners on a turntable….. It won't be designed by me

Over the years i have had pretty much all class d modules in hand for testing. Some sound horrible, most sound good and only a few sound truly spectacular.

Ice Power is so wide spread with many companies selling class d amps using Ice. All the boards are essentially the same, with different wattage ratings, some with SMPS and some without, some are stereo but most Ice boards are mono. All of them have a very low input impedance of 8-12kohms. Which is fine for 90% of pre amps out there but some like tube pre amps, have a very high output impedance, which is around 2.5kohms. This can present a tough load on the amp, the down fall is rolled off bass and less bass definition.

The input buffer these companies are using, are very simple, they use JFET's or OpAmp's to raise the input impedance to a much safer level, around 40-50kohms. But the higher you go up, the more noise you'll get. Some companies have there inputs at 300kohms lol

Here at Aluminati we have used various class d boards, most recently made an amp using the Ice Power 500asp board. Fantastic amp and we have one remaining!!

Also make case solutions for nCore NC400 board. This board is for DIY only and just a few tools and a case can get you a true hi end amp.

Class D is the only way i go. The highs have such shimmer and accuracy.

Best,
Matt

Thanks all for the responses:

PMCH (Paul): I bet that was a nice match. Those Crescendos look really sweet!

NorthStar (Bob): Yeah, I will have to contact him on the Lounge. I knew there were a few others over there that had them, but I couldn't remember who. I will definitely tell him you said hello.

watchdog (Eric): I have read that the newer models are getting better. Also, I hear that the Bel Cantos are pretty amazing. Definitely let me know if you ever drag them out for a listening session.

KraemerDesigns (Matt): Hey Matt! I agree about the TT - I was totally blown away by your TT~1 when I visited Emotiva HQ. I have followed all your builds along the way. I have learned a lot from them and the feedback of your customers. You definitely make some nice units. Will let you know if my research sways your way. ;)

Thanks again all,

C
