Last week I downloaded Queen's Greatest Hits 1 from HD Tracks. This was a 96/24 and that was the only version available. The sound was not very good by other download standards as it sounded rather compressed.

Is there a better version available for download or was the original recording not good enough for a better rendering? Vinyl is not an option for me.

Thanks

That album from HDTracks is "hot" - based on a 2011 Remaster.

Look for original CDs from 1981 EMI Records if you can find it.
CD reference number is CDP 7 46033 2
Trivia note: Track 10 is misspelled "Sombody to Love"

Another version from 1981 is the Elektra album
CD Reference number 5E5642-2
Similar cover but slightly different track list.

This is a useful reference for looking up alternate versions:

First of all, in my opinion, the place where these so called greatest hits start from is AFTER the good stuff.

You want to listen to the first 2 albums in any form. Sheer Heart Attack is the last really rockin album before they went commercial.

IMHO Queen's music fits in the same sandbox as The Stones and Springsteen. All three are much better live performers than what ever comes across in their recordings. They were meant to be seen live.

Excellent point...Sheer Heart Attack was a good show

I just watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night. Great movie.

I am betting more than half of the people who watched it and say they are Queen Fans had never heard the opening song in the movie, Doing Alright from the very first album.

They mis-represented some of the makings of the Stomp Stomp Clap for We Will Rock you, but since Brian May was the producer, he had the freedom to not tell the full story.

So after the movie, I spun Queen 1 and Queen 2 for good measure.
