pc to avr

hello all i have a question,im hooking up my pc to an avr,im waiting for an optical cable to be delivered,but in the meantime can i hook it up using the hdmi out on the gpu to the hdmi in on the receiver for just audio while using the dvi out from the gpu to the monitor for the display?

Yes, you should be able to do that without an issue and probably your best choice for connections.

Normally, optical TOSLINK cable is not the proper choice for connection to AV receiver (even though I use it - that's only because my DVD-era AV receiver has no HDMI input).

With a TOSLINK you won't be able to play TrueHD or DTS HDMA (other than downgrading to DTS Core) audio tracks found in Blu-ray or UHD discs.
