The long awaited replacement for the BDP-105 is almost here & it looks like it will be a cracker. Aside from being 4K and UHD compliant, the new player will use the latest ESS Sabre dac chip, and according to Dan Wright should have a similar circuit design to the new Sonica dac/streamer, except of course for the transport mechanism. Due to the very high current the video side draws, the psu should include a toroid feeding the analogue output stage and a switcher psu feeding everything else; again the same as the Sonica, but probably beefed up a bit.

I had a chat to an Oppo Dealer who said Oppo won't release the new player until it is ready & has been thoroughly tested to avoid all the firmware fixes following the release of the UDP-203. Hence I would feel comfortably being an early adopter.

Dan Wright has been commenting over at Audio Circle that he plans to offer truth mods for the new player after he gets his example, including his usual tube mod with external psu, and a lesser cost single-box ss mod incl: new discrete op-amps, re-designed boards, MW caps & their own Super Voltage Regulators. Dan said the tube mod will be a totally new & re-designed mod far beyond what they did on the BDP-105 & similar to the Marantz SA8005 mod. The single-box mod should be similarly impressive. Modwright should also offer the optional Bybee Music Rail & Audio Magic Pulse Gen ZX upgrades as usual.

Personally I think the full tube mod is a bit of overkill given the average life cycle of these players, and the fact I already own a Vitus SCD-025 Mk2, however a UDP-205 with single box Truth mods (incl:Bybee upgrade) is firmly on my wish list for 2017 :).
