Our TV is connected to a surround sound receiver. In the system there is no stereo out for headphones - frustrating. I notice that pass through HDMI units are available with stereo output. Our receiver is driving surround sound speakers plus woofer. Would the mentioned unit provide stereo headphone output? I’m not sure if there is encoding that would prevent that.

If you're not too concerned with the sound quality, searching for an "hdmi splitter headphone jack" on somewhere like Amazon should return some results for what you're looking for.

HDMI pass through just lets you listen/watch TV without your receiver being on.

How are you wanting to use the headphones, music, TV at night, etc.?

Many newer receivers will send Bluetooth audio signal to Bluetooth headphones.

Another way maybe if a preamp output you can connect a headphone amplifier which would drive the headphones and allow volume control.

If just for TV it may have options as well, like a headphone jack or Bluetooth output.
