When I think of smooth jazz, the first person that comes to mind is guitarist Norman Brown. Norman’s penchant for incorporating stellar musicianship with groove-oriented compositions has proven to be a formula for a very long and successful career.

A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Brown first picked up the guitar when he was 8. He was initially inspired by the rock/blues pyrotechnics of Jimi Hendrix and was soon drawn into the web of the pioneering jazz giant, Wes Montgomery, his father’s favorite artist. I didn’t pickup on the Hendrix influence, but there is no mistaking the Montgomery effect. Add George Benson to the mix and you end up with a very savory musical blend.

My first introduction to Mr. Brown was while watching a video of his band that was submitted for a TV talent show on BET in the early 1990’s. I really didn’t make the connection until several years later. The movie Passenger 57 end credits were rolling and there was this amazing arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s Too High that was playing and I said “Who is that?” I set glued to the tube to find out and it was none other that Norman Brown! That very day, I went shopping for his debut project, Just Between Us and have been hooked ever since!

Alright….sit back, relax and enjoy the smooth jazz stylings of Norman Brown.

Norman Brown is a virtuoso, a blast to experience live in concert and has a smile that is just as infectious as his music. Thank you, Norman, for putting the “smooth” in smooth jazz!
