No One Ever Agrees!

I think I only have 42 from the list but I can't say any of those albums don't deserve to be on some kind of "best of" list.

Edit: I probably have 3 or 4 more in anthologies

I wish I had as many of them as you do! But yours are probably on CD though. :(

And hi-res download for many! I also probably have 30 or so on LP in permanent storage...

edit: on reviewing the list I have most on hi-res download or SACD, only a handful on CD.

Rob-I will gladly give your "30 or so" LPs in permanent storage a great home! :D

80% of those records are on 90% of most top 100 list you'll find on the 'net. its not to say it isn't a solid list -it is- I can see why almost every one of those picks are there (genre defining, artist milestone, etc). I was banished from a discussion of 'best of' jazz records when i hinted "kind of blue" was my top pick. among the 'Barrys' of the jazz LP collecting world ("high fidelity" reference) its a cliche to even suggest its Miles best record let alone best jazz record of all-time. audiophiles are putty in hands of music snobs and academic types.:(

That I am sure everyone agrees.:congrats:

Why would you need a RCM with such a snug cleavage on tap. :D

I thought I had too much Jazz genre but not after seeing that list. :sigh:

Wow,

No Monty Alex.
No Wynton M.
No James Carter
No Oscar Peterson
No Billy Holliday
No Billy Eckstein
No Allen Toussaint?

and the Ella & Satchmo album?

Yes, impossible to get agreement on such a list.

That's a great post Rob. I know those "Barry" types; those who want to flex their musical muscle, by bringing to the party...something no one else has even heard of. Hell, I used to be one of those guys :P

And while I'm proud of my breadth of knowledge and exposure; it takes a certain arrogance, to fly in the face of conventional wisdom. So now I think of such things, in terms of my favorite...and the "best".

I'm reminded of this paradox, when thinking about a favorite Pink Floyd title for example. How many would say DSOTM is their "favorite"? Is it the record I enjoy listening to most? Probably not (the ironic thing being, part of that is probably because it's been over-played so much; and of course, it's only been over-played so much...because of how wildly popular it is); but just because I might prefer to listen to The Wall (not saying I do...just for the sake of argument), or love David's playing on Obscured By Clouds (which I do...it's sick)...does not mean, I could say with a straight face, they're "better" than DSOTM.

I tend to think of jazz as live music, so my own list would include many more live recordings, especially since the last 20-25 years have seen so many classic live performances officially released.
