I'm thinking of moving my VPI Classic 3 downstairs and getting a new table for downstairs. I love the Kronos, AMG and others.

Any suggestions?

brinkmann balance, and alltime great table. if i was in that pricerange i would look no further. kronos sparta is a real nice looking table, but i never heard it. dr feikert is pretty nice too. and spiral groove is a favorite of mine. they kinda look alike too.
and i think if i got another choice for arm for my table (triplanar) i would stick with the merrill forever. love everything about it. new one is a little nicer looking i think. but i always like the one i dont have.lol.
just heard a kuzma ref 2 and it was nice. i really like the kuzma arm and the
table was great with a really cool suspension on it.

here is a few to look at

The two cheaper tables are. the two expensive tables are belt drive

Don't forget Shane's TW Acoustics either! Probably more choices of tts than digital gear nowadays. :scholar:

Of course, we know what would happen if I said this on another unmentioned forum.

I love my Basis turntable with Vector 4 tonearm. Not the prettiest table in the world, but the performance is excellent, detailed and stable. I've had many of the usual suspects over the years and the Basis outperforms all the ones that have been in my system. The thing that stands out about this table and arm is the degree of precision that went into the design and manufacturing. It became very clear to me when I unpacked my table and assembled it. IMO, genius...Setup was simple and clear. The Vector tonearm is a work of art and, to me, beats the heck out of any VPI arm I have seen and owned.

From a Basis review in Absolute Sound. "….. it exudes a sense of refinement and quality. This feeling is amplified as you look more closely at individual parts. Some high-end products that appear well-made from a distance don’t hold up under close scrutiny. But with the Inspiration, the
closer I looked the more impressed I was."

My heart is saying Kronos. Every time I hear it, I'm just floored. My concern is that Kronos is really Louis. What if something happens to Louis?

Is the SME 30/12 not up to snuff these days? I see one on the 'Gon for a good price.

Been a few nice turntables suggested, I would add the Kuzma Stabi M/4 Point. May be hard to find... selling as fast as he can make them

i still say its not in the table itself its in the arm and cart and wiring. the sme is my least favorite arm in the bunch of high dollar arms, but the sme tables are real nice. i often thought "is it a sin to buy an sme table and put a different arm on it??"
hey didnt raidho buy bergmann?? they make some pretty tables, but i never heard them.
the kronos i watched on audiogon sat for months and got cheaper and cheaper and cheaper , until the guy finally practically gave it away. the resale of those tables would scare me. especially the way you flip through gear.
ive heard mixed reports on the vpi direct. even from dealers who sell them.
mike you used to have an avid table if i remember correctly, the top of the line avids are beauties, but i dont know anyone who has one. any reports on them??
if you were to get a spiral groove sg1 with a triplanar arm and a mc anna cart. im sure you would love it. :) know i would . lol
i was going to say check out Annapolis raiders table, its a beauty as well.

I'm curious what mixed reports you've heard about the Classic Direct.

No one who has heard the Classic Direct here has complained and in fact a few went and bought it. The acid test for any table in my mind is how it compares to tape. Sure there are tables that "sound" nice but what are they adding or subtracting from the music? Believe me that the Direct/Atlas combination gives you a real taste of the tape eg. dynamics esp. in the low end, harmonic completeness, soundstaging and neutrality. Perhaps they are complaining more now about the cartridge or their phono section?

Myles - I look forward to hearing the Direct. The rumors have been that the Classic Direct is not much better than a Classic 3 with an SDS. I've heard many rumblings about this from more than a few. I don't believe it myself. I need to hear it myself first. But that's the grumblings.

Well they're crazy. :) Tell me how a table that has 10-30X worse speed stability can sound the same? It's impossible implemented correctly.

Knowing HW, there's no way he would put out a product that didn't sound better. It's that same old sniping that goes on against VPI. Just look at Audiogon. :(

In fact, VPI notwithstanding, it's that sniping and rumor mill that makes this hobby disgusting. :(

I heard many combinations, even I heard the classic Direct at Myles house (not the Atlas/DD combo) but still I prefer the AMG. I think all turntables over 5k are very good, is a matter of personal taste.

Mike, if your heart says Kronos go for it

:)

P.S.

Try to avoid the Reel to a Reel from Myles, is depressing good.
Makes you want to sell your gear and start a new hobby

:D

And I've made a few improvements to the system since you were over. :) Stay far, far, away!
