New Luxman d-10x sacd/cd-player

It is not uncommon for Dealers and Manufacturers to keep issues like this under wraps. I have been openly asked not to disclose or post my experience by 2 Dealers and 1 Manufacturer.

Stuff breaks. We spend far too much time dealing with it to be honest, especially when those people bought from another dealer. [emoji35]

Just yesterday, two guys with SimAudio CD players and the drawer wouldn’t open. One bought from us, one didn’t. Sim will fix it. They’re great. Like I said, stuff breaks, especially stuff that’s moving.

Daily, we get calls like “my 1985 Luxman amp isn’t working.” [emoji15]

That's cause in 85 Luxman was owned by ALPINE who drove the name into the ground. You wouldn't get those calls if the Luxman products were made in the 70's!! :)

As an update to my story. I have a new D-10X shipping directly from Luxman and they will send mine back to Japan for evaluation. They even bought all the same SACD's that were causing issues so they can do some forensic work on it. That's service! I am sure the new one will be the machine i hoped it would be. Meanwhile I have decided to order an X1 which i will use stand alone and as a streamer into the 10X so as to compare the 2 DAC's. I believe the U1 price just went up quite a bit and the difference is much less between it and the X1, so why not?

If the timing works out, I plan a shoot out between my SA-10 and the D-10x.

I expect the Marantz to fare quite well in a comparison. I would still buy the SA-10 again. I'm just changing it up for the heck of it and I have some of the MQA cds that the Luxman will be convenient to spin them on as opposed to ripping and playing on my Lumin. I hope the Luxman is outstanding and I haven't read about anyone else experiencing problems with the player but 2 in a row is certainly a red flag if it can be attributed to defective players

Christian – Did you receive the D-10x yet? If you did, what are your initial thoughts in comparison to the Marantz SA-10?

Thanks!

I did. The Luxman is in a different league compared to any digital I've ever listened to.
Not to take anything away from the SA-10 as it was the most enjoyable sacd/cd player I've owned up to the Luxman.

The Luxman is realistic in reproducing music in a way I've never heard music digitally reproduced before.

The phrase that reviewers sometimes write along the lines of "hearing things on discs that one has never heard before" always struck me as hyperbole but that's the only way I can describe the Luxman.

The digital components I compared the Luxman to were the Lumin X1 and the Marantz SA-10 - and the Luxman is incontestably superior to my ears.

Hello,

Did you have an opportunity to compare the D-10X to any of the newer Esoteric offerings? That seems to be the main competition. Thanks.

Randy

I have not heard the new Esoteric offerings. The other options I considered were the Esoteric K-01XD and the K1X, though.
Honestly, I didn't want to be tempted by the thought of adding a clock or power supply to the Esoteric units. I really wanted a one box solution that I could be happy with. And at this point, I'm very happy with the performance of the Luxman. I had modest expectations at best and expected a different voicing and maybe a little of this or that, but the Luxman checks every box in every category I can think of. There is nothing lacking for me. I was apprehensive with some descriptions of the player as very "neutral" but I needn't have been concerned.

Got my D10x this morning after almost a year of waiting.
out of the box, it sounds so open, detailed, and yet liquidy, mid are natural to little warm, the low end is very defined - just raise my expectation bar for performance level after the burn-in process.

Thanks for your thoughts on this and comparison with your Marantz. I own an SA-7S1 and have been looking at the DX-10.

Good to hear [emoji4] What was the major sonic difference?

You really need to go listen for yourself. You’re in Europe. Hopefully you can find some where to listen. Munich will have luxman and esoteric rooms.

So, I finally bought the D-10X from Suncoast since that's where I heard about it first, and Mike was so keen on it when it was introduced. I could have bought anything. I was going to go listen to K01-XD at a dealer, but never got around to it.

Put the Luxman on a set of CMS Center Stage 2M, 1.0 footers. Sounded good right out of the box, but once it burned in, WOW. I couldn't be happier. Thank you, Suncoast!

(Oh, my analog set-up is a 3-motor, TW Acustic Raven Anniversary, on CMS TT footers, with a Triplanar arm and Lyra Etna cartridge)
