New Bryston Phono Products

Hello,

I have started a new thread ont these phono preamp having not seen yours back in august... How was the listening ?
My dealer doesn't tell me much about these, except fot the letter on the Bryston site...
I have bought earlier this year the BDA2 (and very pleased with it), and just ordered (reserved before the incresase of prices) the BP17, without the phono option, as I do not have the extra cash for the time being....

So I have few questions about these phono preamps and the line preamps aswell, consequently): do they need the PS3 or MPS2 to work ?
How do they differ from the BP1.5 ? how is the two stages amplification explained in the tech note you wrote about brystons phono preamp fits in ?

On the line preamps:
I might have to cancel my order and wait to buy the BP26 with MPS2 and use the latter when I could buy the BP1.5 or one of these (if they need the separate power)....
The choice of preamp at bryston is tough cause as it has been said on this forum, the BP17 is a newer design, when compared to the BP26, but still the BP26 is presented as top of the line...
Which drove me to choose the BP6 in the first place (cheaper BP26 ? but my dealer said if one day i want the 4B then the BP6 will lack precision, trnasparency.... so I went for the 17), and also because you wrote that the BP17 had a more "laid back" sound.... and I like forward sound.... My speakers are JBL with compressions, and this makes a forward sound.... the question is will the BP17 balance the whole and make the sound "falt" (in terms of presence not response curve) ? will the BP26 will increase this JBL effect having the singer shouting at my face ? or will it patricipate to the impression of live ?
So many questions, sorry...

David

Hi David,

Yes the new power supply has to be used with the new phono stage. You can use the new phono stage with the MPS-2 if you want as well.

Sonically the BP17 has a soundstage that is a bit more laid back over the Bp26 but it is subtle at best so I think given your speakers either preamp would be fine. The advantage of the BP26 is it offers Balanced inputs whereas the BP-17 only has Balanced outputs. The advantage of the 17 is it has both Source and Volume remote whereas the BP26 only has volume remote. So it is really more of an Application choice rather then a Performance choice.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does ! as for sticking with the BP17 in terms of soundstage presentation, but not when it comes to phono section...
Another option is to buy the BP17 with the phono option... would you say the BP1.5 is far superior to this "option" ?

(incredible to get so fast an answer from you... I was a mcintosh guy and gave it up for Bryston (DAC, and soon preamp), and now I am still a "JBLer", but got interested in Bryston speakers and ... no I cannot write this for now.... )
Many thanks
David

Hi David

The Phono section that goes into the BP-17 is the same as the one in the BP-1.5.

There is only enough room in the BP17 to put an internal Moving Magnet Cartridge phono section whereas the BP-1,5 has both a MM and a Moving Coil stage. So as long as you are only using a MM cartridge the BP17 with the MM phono would work great. Then later if you wanted a Moving Coil cartridge you could add our new TF2 MC step-up to your system.
