I just saw a perfect little movie: Mr. Holmes.
I get concerned about little movies when I go to my local ten-plex and six screens have “Big-Movies Ant-Man playing in different formats, Imax, 3D, regular and large screen. We paid $18 each to see Ant-Man in Imax 3D and $18, in total, for three of us to see a great movie: Mr. Holmes.
Mr. Holmes has Ian McCullan portraying Sherlock Holmes in his 90s. He is still famous, but now retired in one of those British landscapes that I have missed since those Merchant Ivory films. Holmes has to accept and deal with the problems of aging. Because the plot is done so well, and so cleverly, I am trying my best to give nothing away, so you get no spoilers here.
What was so clever here is that there are really four different plots going on at the same time, each showing a part of Holmes’ life, both in the present and in his past. The plots are thoughtful and so tied together, the dialogue is intelligent, forceful and witty.
I am used to seeing Laura Linney at her beautiful best, but here she has the courage to “dress” down and become a middle age mother. He performance as outstanding.
This is Ian McKellen’s movie and he is brilliant. He sets the tone and the stage in the first 90 seconds of the movie and does not break it. On a Home Theatre site where we discuss big movies with big soundtracks, this is simply a great little movie with a gentle but effective score and sound effects. These are the movies I like the best.
Please see it and on the biggest screen you can. The British countryside is breathtaking.
