Movie time ... 2021 and beyond

The year 2021 is almost over.
The 2022 Oscars are upon us (94th Academy Awards) ... March 27, 2022.

▪︎I did not see 'Belfast', yet ... I would love to because black and white cinematography and photography are my bag.

▪︎'Dune' started with a bang, and kept it high enough with the musical score and the visual effects (CGI). I wasn't enthralled fully...I rated it 68% ... good.
The actors didn't rock me, the picture quality was sombre overall (non-IMAX).
It will get the Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects...IMPO.

▪︎'The Power of the Dog' was super slow for quite some time (I almost gave up after 45 minutes or so). I stuck with it till the end...I'm glad I did; it's the cinematography and the strong acting that kept me alive. I would rate it 88% ... very good.
It has good chance to win the Oscar statuettes for Best Picture and Best Director.
It was much more rewarding than I could have imagined.

▪︎'No Time to Die'? ...No rush.

▪︎'West Side Story'? The same.

What sez you? Because movies matter ...

I'm pretty soured on movies of late, because of all the sh*te the movie industry has been producing the last several years. Check out the Critical Drinker on YouTube, who actually is a professional novelist, for his take on most movies today. I'm very much in agreement with him. Personally, I'm really, really, really tired of the constant rehashing and remaking of the same "franchises" over and over and over again. How many times are they gonna do the Spiderman and Star Trek franchises? Urg. The late great Roger Ebert was spot-on when he said Hollywood should focus on re-making it's bad movies rather than remaking...the good ones. He was right. Doh! Sorry, but the original The Manchurian Candidate was the best, not that loser flick with Denzel Washington. You won't find a better director than the late, great John Frankenheimer. Or, the remake of The Day of The Jackal with the dreck that was The Jackal with Bruce Willis. Gawd, what a piece of cr*p that was. Yeesh!

And now...we've got a remake of "West Side Story". I know Spielberg is good, but he's not better than Robert Wise. And, as someone who trained for decade as a classical ballet dancer, IMHO, you simply won't find better dance choreography than that by Jerome Robbins in the original 1961 film. So....gonna pass for the time being. Maybe I'll check it out when it hits the streaming services.

100% in agreement with you on The Power of the Dog (also with Benedict Cumberbatch)

And an oldie but a real goody...
Seven Days in May Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas directed by none other than, yes...John Frankenheimer. They don't get any better than this and the original Manchurian Candidate for political thrillers.

And, I have to say, The Green Knight looks interesting...have to check that out.

Best TV series I've seen this year, all available on streaming services...

"Mare of Easttown" with Kate Winslett. Absolutely extraordinary....astonishing performance by Kate Winslett, too.

"The Defeated" about life in immediate post-war Berlin.

The last couple years have been different, filmmaking wise.
And that, is the biggest movie of them all; real life events minute by minute all over the globe. That's what we all watch mainly, with theaters in the back burner, and safest steam being streaming...Netflix and all. It's just not the same anymore, for both the filmmakers and crews and moviegoers. Our mind is not set in the movie zone like it used to; it requires something very special. And I also find that it's similar with music; it brings me closer to the true essence...classical music and opera. ...Dramatic music of deep passion and extreme gentleness...music for airports.


* That was nice to see Jane Campion coming back after 12 years (since her last full feature film). I think it's going to pay off.

Best Cinematography? To my eyes so far: 'The Power of the Dog'.
I need to see 'Belfast'.
