In a blog that I just came across, the author (Archimago) proposes that based on his own testing, the distribution of costs for a digital set up should be as follows:

Room: 40%
Speakers: 40%
Power-amp: 8%
Pre-amp: 4%
DAC: 5%
Source Hardware (PC/Streamer): 0.5%
Source Software (playback): 0.5%
Analog Cables: 1%
Digital Cables: 0.1%
Miscellaneous: 0.9%

The author based his conclusions on his own testing (detailed in the article). I do not expect many folks here to agree, but is certainly a thought-provoking article.

In my current set up (not including the room as a "component"), my allocation is more like 75% speakers, 25% the rest.
