Anyone have experience with Modwright OPPO 95/105 and Weiss MAN301/Medea? Can the Modwright really compete with high end sources?

I'm thinking whether to get the Modwright or an OPPO transport with high end DAC from Weiss, Esoteric, dCS, MSB, etc?

Have a Weiss Medea+ at my home for auditioning. Using Marantz UD9004 as a transport. Power cords are stock and digital cable is ~$50.

Out cold it sounds amazing! One of the biggest improvement I've ever heard in my system. It will only get better.

Will the Modwright be remotely close to it?

Hi Tommy,

The Medea+ has the reputation of being an outstanding dac. I am glad you find it awesome.

Tommy...weren't you asking about tube rolling for the Modwright Opp 105 in another thread? If yes and you have both on hand (it sounds like), have you started comparing the two and what are your thoughts? Thx

I haven't paid for the Modwright yet. Maybe I should save up and get the Weiss instead? It's just so much better than my $6K Marantz UD9004. But the Weiss is a lot of $$ too.

Resolution is top notch. Each instrument owns a space. More 3D. More organic, smoother and deeper. Very musical.

Tommy - I've read very good things about the Weiss DAC, and I have no doubt about what you are hearing. I will say that the ModWright Oppo will sound much better than your Marantz as well!

It really depends on what you are looking for out of your system. For me, to have all of the features and flexibility of the 105 (and now with the "D" version and having a true DSD USB accessible DAC built in), with the significantly improved sound quality of the ModWright tube analog stage, makes for a truly phenomenal unit regardless of price. You almost never see one for sale, and the 95s that I've seen posted for sale are usually owners that want to upgrade to the 105(D).

Tommy, have you considered the Luxman DA-06. It works well with Shindo and is an excellent Dac. Does DSD as well.

I've just paid for the Modright OPPO 105D. It's much more flexible than the Weiss and Luxman. I believe with the right tubes, it can sound as good as the Weiss.

The Weiss, while sounds amazing on good recordings, it doesn't sound any better than the Marantz on average recordings (e.g., Elvis Presley). I also prefer a little more warmth in the midrange.
