Well folks, gotta ask.

Why did Magico decide to change the diaphragm design on the 28mm M-pro tweeter when they designed the S7 and S5 MKII? I understand that they have to make changes to the motor design for efficiency and driver integration purposes, but the tweeter on the M-pro/Q7 MKII is a legend in its lifetime.

My two cents: you're splitting hairs. The S7/S5 mk2 tweeters are every bit as good as the M Pro Tweeter. I've heard them ALL.

Maybe true Mike, but even if they're in the same league sonically, why change from 26mm in the original beryllium tweeters to the MBD28mm then back to 26mm for the S7/S5 MKII and now the new M3 is to use the MBD28? Also, I read that they had to machine all the baffles in the original Q7s to accommodate the larger 28mm tweeter for the MKII updates, no small feat.

Just sayin...

Larger voice coil=better power handling. *If* the motor was the same, the minimal difference in diaphragm size and mass would make a miniscule audible difference.

I don't think so, and it is also much more expensive. The 28mm tweeter is in a league of his own. Much better dispersion, lower cutoff, higher power handling, etc. Get some in your store, you will see.

No more M Pro's to be had unfortunately. I've heard all these speakers we are discussing. The new tweeter in the S series is remarkable, reminds me very much of the M Pro. Looking forward to hearing the new M3's.

FYI, a larger diaphragm will have narrower dispersion.

I said better not wider. According to Magico it is the profile of the dome that makes the improvement. The size gives it better power handling.

Bigger size = bigger voice coil = better power handling = possibility to lower the x-over point

The offshot is narrower dispersion.

Larger dome and voice coil also means more moving mass, which means slower transients. Transient speed is already a weakness of dome tweeters.

Not necessarily, we know very little about this new dome, what if it is of lighter composition, or a shallower profile, or lighter, shorter, voice coil, etc. All I can say that the tweeter on the MPro was the most amazing tweeter I have ever heard...

Mass is important , its also relative and affects both percussive energy and speed. Realism off instruments comes from percussive (weight of instruments being reproduced) energy and speed.

Im sure Magico worked on increasing drive if mass was increased ..

Any Data..?

I agree they're fantastic tweeters. But the dome is only a small percentage of the moving mass, most is comprised of the voice coil and former. That's why all the 25mm vc tweeters have moving mass of about .3-.35g, and all the 28mm vc tweeter are around .4g. No matter the dome material, they're all in the same ballpark.

I'd suspect (from my own experience) as much to do with improvement in perceived sound in the new models is cabinetry that greatly reduces edge diffraction, possibly as much as the new tweeter itself. Magico incorporating that was a smart move, even though it adds significantly more machine time and cost, it's worth it in a SOTA speaker.
