In preparation for receipt of Mike's S1's as a pacifier until my M3's arrive, I have been obsessing over speaker placement in a room. I stumbled on a lot of data published by Cardas of Cardas cable fame. Here is his formula. If I follow it, the speakers are way farther out in the room than I've ever had them. I'm going to give it a try. The other suggestion, the "rule of thirds" says the listener's ears and the speaker face should each be 1/3 the distance from the rear wall / front wall respectively.

Comments? My room is a true rectangle at 14' by 20'. This formula places the speaker center 3.8 feet from the side walls and the front of the speaker 6.25 feet from the front wall.

In the fairly extensive set-up instructions include in the manuals for Vandersteen speakers, Richard also suggests trying 1/7th and 1/5th in a narrower room otherwise the distance between the speakers could be too small. I have used his setup guide regardless of whether the speakers at the time were Vandersteen or others. With the Nola K.O.'s I ended up with 1/5th pretty much the same as the Vandersteen Treo before them. He also addresses tilt based on the height of your seat and ears. More critical with the Vandies, but relevant with others too.

Eric - once the M3's arrive, the best investment you could make is a visit from Jim Smith. Once you see him work, you will be amazed at what he can do and how much more he gets out of a system from perfect speaker setup.

Eric, this I can promise you, your Magico's will be 100 times easier to set up than your previous speaker.

Nice Mike. I'll start with some background knowledge using his DVD's and experiment on the S1's. Will talk about a house call in October. Thanks for the referral.
