While I wait for my Magico M3's, Mike was kind enough to loan me a pair of their S1's to keep the music flowing. I also sent my Transparent speaker cables back to the factory for the Gen 5 upgrade. While I wait, I am finally going to take the time to set up the room with a precise set up of speaker distances and toe in angles. This thread will describe the process and hopefully generate a good discussion about the pitfalls and the triumphs of spending time on your room instead of even more money on gear upgrades. My room (measured precisely with a new laser device) is 14' 2" wide, 19'6" long and 10' high. The walls and corners are well treated with ASC tube traps and Sound Planks. I am going to add bigger top corner traps to replace the Room Tunes triangles that seem mostly ineffective. I used a lot of treatments feeling that it would be easier to subtract later than to add if necessary.

I started this process with by binge watching the DVD set called Getting Better Sound. It was an eye opener and embarrassed me into getting serious about accurate placement through precise measurement. First tasks for this weekend: Identifying and marking the center meridian of the room, placing the S1's precisely 3' from the side walls and setting up the chair / rear wall distance so I get a starting point of 10 feet from ear to speaker face without being too close to the rear wall. I was using an overstuffed settee for a chair but my head sank deeply into the cushion...a no-no according to GBS DVD. I have an Eames recliner on the way and the settee has been banished from the room.

I had a nice visit with Mike when I picked up the S1's. It was necessarily a brief visit if I wanted to ever retire. He has more high quality gear than you can imagine - horns, tubes, tapes, transistors. Good thing I had a very small car with only enough room for the S1's.

This is a view of the front wall. Mac Mini with a monitor big enough to see the files/tracks from my chair. The boxes in the foreground contain the Raidho D3's prior to departure. I will post pictures of the S1's in position this weekend.

Will be interesting to hear your verdict on the M3s, when are they due?
