So, first of all I’m a Magico fan. I currently have S3 Mk2 and have moved up the product line from S1 and S3. I’m getting close to making a decision on moving to M2 or M3. With M3 beginning to show up on used market , the M2 and M3 are comparably priced. Anyone had a chance to hear both speakers in the same system? Thoughts?
Best,
Bob
it's been so so long since i've heard the m3 but that was the speaker that made me want a magico. the dna of the sound is there in other models but the m3 has this relaxed, zen to the resolution. it really is an insane speaker
the m2, i heard more recently. loved it. it's one of the best looking speakers i've seen and i love the small form factor. i think it looks better than the m3...the fit n' finish is just slightly better and the top-plate looks less like an awkward hat
the biggest take aways for me, sonically, were that despite its dimunitive size it can play really big. that comes from the greater internal volume allowed from thinner cf side walls (that are still as rigid as the aluminium ones). i thought it played bigger than my s5mk2. you can hear that shared dna between the s5mk2 and m2. everything is a little bit better with the m2 and, holistically, it adds up to a much better speaker.
if i were in your lucky shoes i'd go by room size. then i'd go by music choice. i had some concerns buying an s5mk2 for my room vs. an s3mk2 which makes a bit more sense for the size. but i'm happy with my choice because i listen to alot of hip hop and electronic so that extra thump from the bass is helpful. i bring this up because i did feel the m2 was a little light in the bass compartively - granted this is not an apples to apples comparison and was in a larger room than my own BUT we had been listening to the same upstream gear with different speakers for some time before the m2 was plugged in. i had some handle on the sound so i feel like i can speak to it with some confidence.
because of the sealed cabs, its easy enough to place and get that extra bass without the boom. don't get me wrong, the bass is very clean there's just a little more of it allowing for a nice, large soundstage. your spectral gear will keep those woofers in check.
