Lumin has announced the U1 Network Music Transport at CES.

It has 5 digital outputs: USB, AES, Coaxial BNC, Coaxial RCA, Optical. USB output supports up to DSD128 over PCM (DoP) or 384kHz. The other outputs support up to DSD64 over PCM (DoP) or 192kHz. (No analog outputs and no DAC chips inside.)

All sampling rates can be upsampled to DSD128 (for USB output) if needed. In this respect it exceeds the capability of S1, which can play DSD128 but not upsample lower sampling rates to DSD128.

U1 comes with the S1 power supply.

In terms of appearance it looks the same as an A1.

Lumin Facebook explains the reason of creating U1: "Many many people already have high-end DACs and dealers have been asking us for a solution to cover that scenario for a long time."

Price is rumoring to be in the $7000-7200 range. But it's all still TBD.

Mike any word from Lumin on an external dac ?

The market position of the U1 is for those users who like the Lumin convenience of network playback, while keep using their own favorite DAC.

I don't think splitting an S1 (hypothetically) into a transport unit and a DAC unit and connect them via an external cable will improve the sound quality. In what scenarios do you think a Lumin DAC (instead of any current Lumin players) will be useful? Other than using a computer to decode new music format not supported by Lumin or do sophisticated processing (e.g. HQPlayer) and have the Lumin sound at the same time, I am not able to think of any yet.

Pretty cool piece.

Mike any word from Lumin on an external dac ?

They have their network music players - all with DAC's. Stand alone isn't their business model. There is more than enough of those already.
