Lumin compared to Marantz NA-11S1 or Sony HAP-Z1ES?

Ozarktom, it seems you prefer the Sony to Lumin? Btw, what's your system?

Sorry, I have never heard the Lumin. But for $2K this Sony is a steal. Incrdible soundstage and very organic sound. It rivals all the Dacs that I have ever owned. Dan Modright and Vinnie of Red Wine Audio is now modding the Z1 with tube regulation if you want the sound of tubes with your DSD. The Modright full mod is $2995, $2495 until the end of April. Both Dan and Vinnie believe they have a new reference on hand with the Z1. But the stock unit really shines by itself.

My present system is the Job 225 amp and the Zellaton Emotion speakers.

The Sony is a great unit. Great to see Sony back in the game.

If anyone here is going to the Chicago Axpona show, check out the Modright room. Dan is hoping to premier his modded Z1 there.

Sony has also another less expensive Hi-Rez music player; the Hap-S1 for $1,000 - just goggle it to see all what it does and supports and features.

I checked the sprcs and I doubt if that one is the same. The S1 only stands 3.5 inches tall, comes with 40 watt amp and a built_in fan, and weighs 12 pounds. Z1 stands 5 1/8 inch high and weighs 31 pounds. There is probably no room to mod the S1 with any tube stages.

And Steve Stone wrote this in his Absolute Sound review.

"Throughout the review period as I put the HAP-Z1ES through its paces, I looked for reasons the player might be not be considered a true high-performance component and found none. If you plan to spend more than $2000 on any digital front end, whether it be an audio-computer, CD player, DAC, network player, or any other front end that uses digital files as a source, and you don’t audition a HAP-Z1ES, you are failing to consider what may well be the benchmark digital product of 2014."

Of course it isn't; not an ES Series. ...And it costs half of the Z1ES.
And true, the S1 has two 40-watt amps built-in, expendable 500GB hard drive, Windows and Mac compatible, noise-shaping technology, DSD remastering, two analog and digital inputs, supports DSD, DSF, MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, ATRAC AL, AIFF/LPCM, and up to 24/192. ...A control App is avail for Android and iOS devices. ...Not bad @ all for a thou ($1,000) machine.

That I like; go to the next higher level with the ES Series. That one got my serious attention.

I would like to hear what the S1 would do on playing the KEF LS50's. For 2500 bucks, that could be a killer system.

NAD, does it have a high-res music server too? ...Or two?

You mean the M50 Digital Music Player ' Wireless HiRes Music Streaming, CD Ripping and Playback", but it has no DSD capability

Some good choices (Sony, NAD, Marantz, SOtM sMS-1000 , etc..) for those that can't afford a Lumin or a AurenderW20

The Sony HAP-Z1ES is getting some good press on AudioCircle and the latest Stereophile

Curious about which product? The Lumin? Let me save you the time - it is exceptionally good. I own two! :)

I wholeheartedly agree with this!

I don't even have my NAS bought yet, just running it from a USB drive....and I already prefer it to my PC/DAC setup. I assume the addition of the NAS will take it even further? Has anyone compared both methods?

Yes, and running over Ethernet from the NAS sounds even better to my ears.
