Hi strange question but does Mcintosh make/or made an ampifier that is under 50 pounds?

There is at least one stereo amp under 50 pounds towards the bottom of that list.

That being said, much of the “McIntosh sound” comes from the use of output transformer, which are hefty.

All their digital amplifiers (class D) are under 50 lbs. I own an MC 275 and it seems to be in that weight range but could be over, not sure.

thanks, I hadn;t looked at their class d amps, as I was hoping to find a class a/b

the 275 is 67#

Most manufacturers who offer Class D after only having Class A/B etc. tend to voice the Class D with a similar sound to their Class A/B amps. It may be worth having a listen if you have to have Mac and it has to remain under 50 lbs.

Hopefully Randy will pop in he has had the Mac Class D.

I have never owned a McIntosh class D. I have had other class D amps... W4S, PS Audio, NAD, Bel Canto, etc. I was considering a Mc class D but after talking to Mc tech support they recommended their A/B amps, stating that the class D really had surround sound setups in mind in their design.

If I were to ever change mine out I might consider one the next time. My amplifier is 75 pounds and a real beast to move. A class D would be a lot more manageable :).

My mistake, I thought the small Mac amp you had was Class D.

Weight aside, just based on sound would you trade your current amp for any of the mentioned Class D amps you did have?

I would not... I love my Mc amplifier. None of the Class D I have had did I like as well.

As a PS... of the Class D amps I did own I would say the NAD 298 with the Purifier chip was probably the best. It definitely was not a Mc, but it was decent for sure.

Of all the amps I have owned I would say the MBL and the T+A that I owned were probably the closes in my preference to my McIntosh. The old McIntosh 754 was pretty special to me, however it was designed to work with their old pre-amps that included switched power outlets (to control the power of the amplifiers) and therefore did not have a power switch on it, which really was not my preference.

Tube amps, which I definitely fell out of like with because they all were far too finnicky, but of those the the Audio Mirror and the Audio Research were probably my favorites.
