Ah yes, I also heard a lot of Dream Theater, but just don't dig them. I don't know what it is that I don't dig in detail, but to me they just sound kind of more heavy metal than prog. Also I feel that their songs kind of run together too much. Tight band and all, but I just don't resonate with that one.

What about The Who? :) ...Judas Priest? ;)

The Who - yes like me some Who
Judas Priest - not so much - I'm just not into metal. (There was a time that I was, but that was back in the 80's. I was a stage manager for a band, also roadie and councilor as well.

Wanted to add: Brian sent me some samplers of Porcupine Tree and other stuff. Amongst all that was a band called Riverside from Poland I believe. Anyway, I like dreamy guitar (Pink Floyd, etc.) and when I took a listen to the Riverside sample disc I was blown away. It's like Pink Floyd on steroids. In fact, they do a cover of a song off Wish You Were Here that to me, sounded stronger than the original, I now prefer it over the original. It's extremely good.
The sampler is not all encompassing of the band's style, just the dreamy stuff. Brian tells me they are more heavy metal in other songs. While not a fan of heavy metal myself (was for a time many many years ago), I'm still going to see what I can find from Riverside to listen to on the interwebs to get a more complete idea. In the meantime, the Riverside sampler is in my heavy rotation stack.

As to Porcupine Tree: He sent me a Sampler and the album Deadwing. Every song is a new adventure. Just an incredible band!

So glad you liked some of what I sent. The PF takeoff is Shine on You Crazy Diamond and yes it kicks nicely. The rest of their work is not overly heavy but the sampler included only the real dreamy cuts from several disks. Porky Tree is also a unique band and over the years have gone thru some different sounds. One thing you can say is that it is hard these days to top some of Gavin Harrison's drumming.

Yes, a good deal of Deadwing has a Tool flavor to it....quite good!
