In Search Of....

I have a friend I ride the train with who, once in a while, comments on me wearing "outdated" headphones and listening to a CD on a portable player. He says I need to get with the times and get earbuds and listen to music off my cellphone.

I let him hear the quality of the sound through my system, then he heard the sound through his basic Apple earbuds. He said it sounded better on mine, but he didn;t want to look like a geek. I told him if he really wants to hear good sound he should come over and listen to my main rig. He hasn;t taken me up on that offer.

Very similar story when I told him about vinyl sales vs digital and the quality of the sound between them. Just a dumbfounded look of disbelief. Bose and Apple have mezmerized the masses over the years that good enough, is good enough, and nothing more needs to be said..

This article alludes to the way listening has changed. People rarely listen to music anymore, they are often multitasking and moving about. Since they aren't realy listening the quality doesn't really matter. For me when the sound is really good it distracts me from whatever else I'm doing. The music commands attention!

I thought it was an interesting article written by someone who knows something about the high-end.

I don't know about the cellphone part, but clearly "get with the times" requires large Beats-like over-the-ear 'phones :)

Whatever happened to the audiophile?

I'm right here. Sittin' in front of the 'puter and downing my second glass of egg nog. I'm also lamenting over how I cannot get this new Mac machine to sound as good as my old Windows machine. #audiophileproblems

I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, this is one of my main criteria to judge a system: does it command my attention? Can I walk out of the room? Can I turn the music off in the middle of a piece?

What happened, just poorly recorded music for the intention of playing on ear buds, via a smart phone or similar device all for the sack of mobility. The majority of people in this day and age are in such a hurry, you got to have your coffee and music on the go.

Or a Ressonescence Invicta Dac with a built-in SDXC card player. Transport and Dac all in one….but you have to like the basic Dac sound...
