This morning I spend some time with a couple of people comparing two Idler drive turntables. Well that was the plan. We spend most our time talking and just having a good time. But I still wanted to share some pictures I took there. The nice thing was it gives me a chance to listen to some audio gear I will never be able to afford.

I hope you enjoy them.

I preferred the Reed idler over the Gerrard idler.

True, the idler drive comparison was between the Reed 3C, the Gerrard 301 and the rebuild Lenco. But the Lenco was not a fair comparison. Since it had a different cart and arm.

The Feickert with the Reed arm was a secondary set. The comparison was held in the office of the distributor of Feikert among other brands.

Was that Garrard a Chris Thornton from Artisan Fidelity table? Also, how did the Feickert/Reed sound?

I have no idea who built the Garrard. If you really want to know I can try and find out.

How the Feickert with Reed sounds. That is difficult to say. It of course all depend on the arm, cart, amp speakers etc. I have heard all 3 models of the Feickert turntables on multiple occasions. It is not a romantic turntable. Turntables like the Linn LP12 or Garrard have more warmth to them. The thing I like most about the Feickert turntables are they will let you hear the qualityof arm, vinyl, cart etc. A Feickert with Kuzma are will sound different from a Feickert with a Reed arm or a Ikeda arm. Most people prefer Reed arms since will give you a lot of information, very detailed, while with a Ikeda arm the sound will be a bit more romantic and a Kuzma arm will have greater punch.

I would prefer the a Blackbird with a top of the line arm, say a Kuzma 4 pointers over a Firebird with say a Jelco arm. Never ever an SME arm.

Personally I think to describe a piece of audio to someone else you sort of need a direct comparison to a piece of gear both people are familiar with.

My own turntable is a SAC girati grande. It has more authority to its sound but less finesse compared to the Feickert.

Many years ago , Garrard 301 with SME was the setup , By 1980 LP12 with uni pivot saw it off
no issues , Now idlers are good again ...

Audio does tend to go round and round .... :)

There are probably good TTs with all kinds of technology. Brinkman for direct drive, Reed for idler, Feickert for belt etc etc.

Then there are mass (TW acustik), lightweight (Rega) and spring (Linn) turntables.

There is something for all taste.
