I am no TAS fan but I do enjoy looking through the magazine (as well as others) at new goodies. Occasionally a common sense article does get printed and I reference this one, "How To Listen To Stereo".
As I recently (and one of the founders of the site along with me mutually agreed) decided to end my participation in another site, which I will leave nameless, as the dogma and politics drove me off, this article I reference, brings to light what was taken as such a contentious subject by others on that nameless site. The rationalizations and dogmatic nonsense was just too much to endure.
In a world where people are paying thousands and sometimes 100s of thousands on room treatments, tweaks etc. to get the best sound with people swearing that things like Version 2 of a certain footer compared to Version 1 makes a HUGE difference, it sometimes amazes me that some of those same people claim obvious things such as "coffee tables between listening position and speakers" and "high back chairs" make "no (or little) difference".
I am not posting this to start a hostile debate, as to me, the overall equation for "enjoyment" of one's stereo is totally subjective, which includes having creature features such as coffee tables or comfortable high back reclining chairs for some while others choose the optimal situation to wring every ounce their stereos have to offer. It is a trade off and only the enduser can answer that question for his or herself. However, if we are going to be honest and NOT rationalize or dig our heels in with dogmatic nonsense, we at least need to recognize that these simple things Mr. Greene raises do indeed make a difference as he so eloquently illustrates in his short article of common sense.
Lastly, I do appreciate this site as it is the only one sticking to the topic of audio and listening. Great job Mike.
