How Steely Dan Composes

Yes...Becker and Fagen were notoriously obsessive about their music composition and production. There are legendary stories about how many studio musicians they'd use to try out for the same part until they found the right player for that part . They would also do a gazillion takes trying out different mics and mic placements and so on. And obviously what is very clear from their music is their ear is superb...they composed harmonically rich/dense songs that were tinged with jazz and blues influences both in the melody lines but also in the layering of complex instrumental harmonies.
