How does advertising/tracking work on this site

I have a general question for you high-tech gurus. I have noticed that ads on this site correlate to items I have looked at on Amazon. For example, on another site someone mentioned a band called Seether. I had never heard of them, so I looked them up on Amazon. Now when I come here I am seeing ads for Seether. The same thing happened earlier when I was looking at refrigerators on Amazon. After that, refrigerator ads started appearing.

I turned off tracking on Safari, but it says web sites can still track you if they want. Other than avoiding the Internet, is there any other way to stop this? I hate to avoid cookies since it is nice to stay logged in, but maybe that is the answer.

Depending upon your browser of choice, you may be able to find ad blocking software that will resolve this issue. I use Chrome and using the AdBlock extension I see no such targeted ads and am able to remain logged in across sessions.
