I have a NAS where I store my Hi-Rez music files. Can I play the files using my laptop thru a USB connection? Am I limited on what resolution the files will play? (ie 192kHz: 24 bit).

If you mount the NAS network share on your laptop computer, you should be able to access the music files. Then you can use your favorite music player software to play back the music, to a DAC or other USB audio device connected to your laptop over USB.

Am I limited on what resolution the files will play? (ie 192kHz: 24 bit).

Only based on what is supported by your music player software and USB audio device. I believe the Bryston BDA-1 supports 24-bit/192kHz.
 
"Mount" the NAS network share? Could you give me a step by step procedure, or maybe I'm not familiar with your description. Thanks for getting back to me, Jack
 
Jack you should be able to play hi-rez music from a NAS to a computer via usb and then via your DAC. A NAS is just a storage device. What software are you using to play the music? Make sure you have all the setting correct to play the native resolution.

A NAS plugged into your computer via usb is just like an external HD and you should be able to play any resolution as long as your music player supports it. What music player are you using on your computer? If it one that I am familiar with I might be able to help trouble shoot.

I run an external HD to my computer, it is my back up drive for my almost 9tb's of music and sometimes I play music from it if I move it to another system. It is basically like a NAS but not on a network.
 
Typically the tracks are played at the highest resolution that your system can handle. That means that even if the FLAC file contains high resolution music, if your system can only handle CD quality music (44/16) for example, the high resolution file is down-mixed to 44/16 so it can play in your system.

If you are certain that your system can play high resolution music, then there must be a setting somewhere that needs to be changed.

Exactly, that's why I want to know what music player he is using.
 
That was what I was going to say. The Computer and/or USB does not determine the resolution. The file/album is encoded in whatever resolution you purchased. The software settings determine what resolution is passed to your DAC. Obviously the file can only be played at whatever maximum resolution that your DAC can handle. If your laptop is a Mac then the DSD level is limited to DSD128 (unless somehow that has changed) and on a Windows PC you are required to install the DAC drivers. It is not too difficult after you get used to it.
 
This is strange. I have a first generation Bryston DAC which is not asynchronous. I have a Bryston BUC-1 which converts everything to asynchronous. When I took the USB cable from the BDA-1 DAC and plugged it into the BUC-1, I only could receive 44 kHz. I'm trying to improve my resolution, not go the other way.
 
The BUC-1 should do hi rez up to 192. I have had problems with Windows Media player outputting at 44K before. I forgot how to fix it. I use Audirvana, Bug Head, Hysolid and rarely JR. You should give Hysolid a try. Its free and easy to use. It does DSD and it sounds way better than JR which is mid fi sounding IMHO. Hysolid is similar to Audirvana but has a little more high freq. energy without sounding bright but as usual, YMMV.

I tried loading Hysolid and everything was fine until it came time for my phone to connect to my PC and it kept saying that it couldn't connect.

Try resetting the router. What phone are you using?

I would also uninstall and reinstall the app. Sorry you are having problems.

I'll have to see where that is located. Sounds like it's close to home for you. Camaro is running good. Got some new tires for her over the summer ( Hankook Ventus V12 ) and they really grip the road and they give me the traction I'm looking for. No C8 in the driveway yet for you?
