Gator gathering

I will never forget the time I was out golfing late one afternoon. I hit the ball into the bunker and while walking across the green to jump in the bunker, I was watching all the building going on on this new condo and not watching where I was going, I jumped into the bunker and there were three gators in there. I about crapped my pants. There mouths opened and they all made this hissing sound. I turned and did what must have been an olympic gold metal winning standing jump out of the bunker back onto the green and took off like hell.

Mike.......The alligator population is booming in Florida and needs to be thinned. Tarpon Lake near Crystal River is choked full of alligators. So is the St. Johns River that flows from Orlando through Jacksonville to the Atlantic. If you want to see a huge population of some monster size gators put your boat in the rim canal around Lake Okeechobee. I have seen 16' gators there. The Ochlockonee River near Tallahassee, Florida is full of big gators. Then there's the Everglades. Gators are everywhere in this state.

In this state as Dan noted the population is out of control. Between the gators, the the massive invasion of large non native snakes moving north from southern fla, its getting crowded with beasties. . I have lived in this state since age 4 and I have seen some big gators while fishing and you learn to respect them and get the hell out of their way. But you just haven't lived until you are kayaking the Everglades Trail and get to encounter a Fla Croc that is as long as my 16' Dorado kayak, lemon and bull sharks in the same day that decide to follow you for a few miles. I recommend, take plenty of tidy whities:afraid:

Alligators, Crocodiles and Great White Sharks are my favorites.

Back in the early seventies we were staying in Ft Lauderdale, and had a canal behind the house. I remember always wondering if Alligators were there.

Then recall as a kid buying new hatchlings hanging from a sign at the fair or something for like a buck, but never lived long with a kid trying to raise it - sad looking back, and maybe that was a way of culling them.

At Orlando Navy Base Golf Course was a resident gator between holes, wonder if he’s still there 30 years later.

I was expecting a story about a bunch of Florida audiophiles meeting up at Mike's place... I guess that would have been a "shark" gathering.

Hope you got your gold medal!

Thought you only had Gators in Fla. This picture is a Croc (pointed mouth...not rounded like a Gator would have).

Yep we have Crocs in the southern region of Fla. They are called the American Crocodile;
""The American is one of the larger crocodile species. Males can reach lengths of 6.1 m (20 ft), weighing up to 907 kg (2,000 lb).[SUP][5][/SUP] On average, mature males are more in the range of 4.1 m (13.5 ft) to 4.8 m (15.7 ft) in length weighing about 400 kg (880 lb).[SUP][6][/SUP] As with other crocodile species, females are smaller; rarely exceeding 3.8 m (12.5 ft) in length.[SUP][7]"
