Fuses

They certainly do matter, even directional placement.

One of the first things I did was change all of the fuses in the McIntosh amps and pre-amp to HiFi Tuning Supremes. My experience is one of increased resolution.

At the end of they day, a fuse especially a slow-blow fuse must perform as intended to protect your equipment.

I had a faulty amp at 500 hours. I blew a HiFi Tuning Supreme fuse, then another. That's when I realised there was a problem with the amp. Expensive realisation.

Apparently, Furutech are good too.

I read somewhere that some fuses can contribute to bass bloat.

I'm thinking about changing the fuses in my Studer gear also.

Telos Quantum X2 seem to be the new fuse on the block. Twice the price of the HiFi Tuning Supreme.

I have a couple of the HiFi Tuning Supreme fuses in my MC501s that I put in a couple of years ago and they made a slight but noticeable improvement in resolution. Recently I've been sucked into the positive discussions and feedback around the SR Black Fuses, so I ordered two to compare in my amps plus another one for my MW PS 9.9 power supply. Supposedly they take a long amount of time to break in and smooth out (75+ hours). I'll report back on my impressions - they should be here in a day or two.

I've installed HiFi Tuning Supremes in almost all my components that use fuses (the 28Bs don't). They have at least a slight improvement in every component, but in terms of impact, I'd rank the relative impact from most to least as such:

1) Theta Dreadnaught I multi-channel amp;
2) Preamp;
3) DAC/CD player;
4) Phono Pre.

I haven't yet installed them in my Aurender, but will eventually. Some folks over at Computer Audiophile reported goods results on Aurender as well. I noticed an improvement even when I installed one in my Berkeley USB converter.

As with virtually every tweak to the power-delivery aspect of my system, I find the costs well worth the benefit.

I'd be very interested in your opinion, I've been thinking about trying an aftermarket fuse for my Hegel H30 for a while.

Great, another worthwhile tweak.:panic:I am barely done with upgraded cables and ic's and I am just starting to upgrade power strips and receptacles (and the receptacles in the power strips). Sounds like fuses are next.

Mark - the three SR Black Fuses arrived today thanks to 2nd day shipping. I performed a quick A/B with the HiFi Tuning Supremes and the Black Fuses and I can definitively state that the Black Fuses are staying in my MC501s - they are easily better and more dynamic in my system and I immediately like what I'm hearing. Adding the third to my MW PS 9.9 seemed to improve detail a bit more, but I'm out of time tonight to do more listening. The Black Fuses have more fullness and body with similar if not better detail than the HiFi Supremes, which seem a bit thin in comparison. I can tell that the Blacks will need more break in time as they are a bit hard around the edges and will hopefully smooth out with some more hours. More to come...

I too am a fuse believer and currently replacing internal fuses with the SR Red range.

I guess I need to figure out what fuse my Hegel H30 uses. I'm ready to give it a try.

As the prevailing wisdom on Audiogon is to start with source and/or pre-amplifier, that's what I did. Can't say I've AB'd whether they do the most good in those components or the amps, but I can say the SR Blacks made a significant improvement in the CDP and pre.

Thanks Pete! What kind of improvements did you hear?

Fuses !! I got caught up on the fuse trend 4 Years ago and replaced a glass fuse in an old Audible Ilussions L1 pre with SR fuse, it blew replaced it with 2 dollar ceramic fuse and didn't notice any difference...

Before You spend big money on fuses play around with cheap yeah I said "cheap" ceramic fuses...

SR Black vs SR Red vs HiFi Tuning Supreme?

Plan to revisit fuses. Have been using HIFiTS in McIntosh gear with success.

When the Denon AVP comes back from the bench, plan to replace its 9 fuses also.

What's the verdict?

Feedback on SR directional placement in McIntosh gear would be appreciated.

Did you ask yourself "why" when the first expensive fuse blew?
