Dropout with Tidal on D1

Recently my wonderful D1 has been dropping out when using Tidal. Not so wonderful! I've tried rebooting the D1 and iPad with no effect. Sometimes it is a short dropout, or series of dropouts, or it just stops playing altogether. It's rare I can get through an album without a problem. Anyone having this with the D1? Any solutions?

This is a Tidal issue that affects many users for different regions using different devices.

From Tidal support:
Our programming team confirmed with me that this is a known issue that is affecting a number of users, which has placed it at the top of their list to fix.

While I don’t have a timeline as to when a fix will go through, please know that our team is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

We realize that this is an inconvenience for you, so we thank you for your patience.

Thanks for the heads up, Peter. I see that the complaint on CA is about playing MQA files. I'm having trouble on all Tidal files - MQA or not. I saw your comment on a somewhat different issue:
"In view of recent worsened Tidal stuttering issues and long load times, I have maximized the memory allocated for playback and made a beta firmware of Lumin S1 / A1 / T1 / D1. Since the load time is slightly reduced, there is a possibility that it can make things worse. Those who like to try it (if you have not received it already) please PM me."

Is this something that might help my situation?

Unfortunately if you are in one of the regions that is having dropouts on all types of titles, I am, Peter's firmware update is not likely to solve the problem but worth trying. I have had it for a while and still have the dropouts on some days and not on others. Always worse in evening hours. In parts of the country has been occurring since June. Four different streamers and three different brands with multiple router and settings changes so not the fault of the Lumin.

Good to know. Thanks. And thanks Peter for the link.

Jack i have the exact same finding as you, although i am in a different time zone than you.

Although recent Tidal issues are not restricted to Lumin player users, we have been trying different ways to alleviate this problem. At this point we have done everything we can and released firmware 9.03 for S1 / A1 / T1 / D1.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to participate in beta testing.

Just had a response from Tidal support on their progress and fix. Here's what they said:

"A solution to the issue should be implemented in the upcoming update to the TIDAL App,
which could still be released this week, if not early next week".

Not really sure how they think tweaking their desktop app is going to do anything about their content delivery infrastructure and bandwidth issues. I guess it looks good and pacifies some for a while.

Plus if your not using the Tidal app from your computer straight into a DAC wouldn't help you anyway.

Yes, I guess I was pacified for awhile. What you say seems to make sense, Jack. If Tidal were to fix the problem, what would they have to do in your view?

The fixes they are going to have to make are going to be expensive if they intend to keep the pricing tiers the same and not split of MQA as a separate tier. They are going to have to increase bandwith and expand server capacity on their own or rent more space on faster server farms. Also if they have split content delivery over to some of the servers of their partner Sprint they need to make sure their peak hour delivery is not being throttled like they have been caught doing with their own video customers. Also trim out the catalogs of some of the artists. Do we really need six or seven versions of every album the Beatles or Stones ever released. Most of the times they are just another run of the same and not some other version.

Spotify and Qobuz do not have any of these problems so it is inherently something wrong with Tidal's currently delivery method that was exposed by the addition of MQA as the addition of Hi Res to the Qobuz catalog did not cause these issues for them.

Wasn't the ENTIRE point of MQA to reduce bandwidth and make 'hi-rez' files available to the masses? Splitting off for a separate tier simply proves that MQA is not succeeding in its task.

I would love to see this issue resolved prior to RMAF. I had not realized this was a universal issue but it has been quite frustrating lately.

Agreed. I was playing MQA files all day at the store. Plenty of hiccups experienced during the day.

Unfortunately in your area and others in Central and South Florida it is difficult for now to tell how much of the problem is Tidal period or just plain internet infrastructure damage. If your in those areas and the other providers are working then it is still on them.

Not sure I agree I can be online for hours watching a movie and never have any delay, but let me start streaming music FROM TIDAL and pauses, studders . Its not my provider.

Chris

Didn't say it was the reason for the problem just that it could be making it worse in some areas. I was having problems when you guys were all fine as recently as the first of the month.

Got a similar response from them in the middle of August after waiting for over a month from the previous correspondence. Anyway, I have tried all their suggestions and now have an alternative source so no longer a big deal to me. Mine is cancelled at the end of this subscription month.

Interesting point about MQA. You might be interested in Mark Waldrep's perspective on MQA's validity. Here's a link: http://secure.campaigner.com/csb/Public/show/jaot4--dc7es-udoeww2
