I had/have the VA beethovens for the things they do exceptionally well, small ensemble jazz live, delicate recordings rich with layers of instruments seem to come alive on these while most high quality speakers deliver the whole but miss the some things these just get Perfect. But when I wanted to boogie, really hammer it I had to pull them out of my system and plug in another pair that could ROCK. I found it interesting that the rock speakers reproduced all the notes the VA's did and they rocked man, but that thing that made them such great rock speakers diminished the intimacy the other speakers could so easily create. that was my system. A pair of quality speakers that could teleport me to a rock concert and another pair that could take me to a jazz club, both speakers equally believable at their specialty.
I finally found a pair that fits my room and makes me forget the little things that so impressed me with my previous system, but the funny thing is all the speakers that didn't meet my criteria still raised the bar another notch for bring something new to the table.

There will never be "one"

The last 5 years I’ve bought and resold 7 pairs of highly regarded speakers and home demoed a couple more. At least half of them were praised for their nearly flat output by reviewers so I’m fascinated that each different pair would influence what I listened to by what they excel at. My search for the perfect speaker was educational at the least and really helped me enjoy what I have with the understanding that every upgrade comes with some sacrifice, that an aspect of my system I find exceptional could just as likely be the result of an artifact/shortcoming elsewhere in the chain.

VA and T&F (both Austrian) make great speakers.
