I was listening to a CD this evening and I always play with the display off as there is a notable difference between having it off and on. Tonight I switched the receiver to "Direct Mode" and got another little bump in the sound quality. Not huge, but noticable, very nice! It sounded even more full and had more depth. Fabulous!

Eric,

I am so happy for you. I love Marantz gear.

You said it Joe! I am now saving up for a new AV Receiver, one of the top two Marantz ones! I'm so impressed with the sound of the CD player I looked at their other stuff. It seems Marantz is the one company that did not stray away from their focus. They make audio stuff, period! everybody into vintage audio gear puts Marantz on top of the heap. I have two vintage Marantz receivers and they are bested only by my vintage Sansui, but by a thin margin! Other companies kind of lost focus, like Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, etc. Those companies make ok audio gear, but you have to go to the very top end unit and it still won't quite be the same sound as a Marantz. I think Marantz uses better quality parts as the reason perhaps. I'm not sure that's it, but it would not surprise me to learn it is or at least part of the secret. Marantz never got into anything else but audio unlike the others.

I had a marantz CD 63 from the time they released it up until a few years ago it finely died I had done just about every mod to it you could think of and it sounded wonderful. I used to buy more expensive players on audiogon to come pair it to and always ended up selling them and keeping my Marantz.

I had the CD-67 SE at one time; but not for long. ...I kept the Rotel RCD-971 instead.
...Then I also bought the RCD-991 later on (a good deal).

That was a long time ago, and now Marantz have similarly priced models with higher sound quality.
...Of course, and the CD-5004 is certainly one of them. ...And what a gorgeous looking CDP!
