Deficiencies of USB

Ah yes, didn't even need to read the article. USB is deficient by it's nature for audio and video and such. It's fine for mice and keyboards and printers and the like, but not much else. It's like the least performing measure of audio interconnection, it's the 1/8 plug of PC connections (1/8 being one notch below RCA). All it really did was replace the PS/2 connection.

I too very much appreciate my Bel Canto ST Glass Fiber over your standard USB. Can't get any better!

I couldn't agree more. Just my opinion, but USB connection is fine for cheap and cheerful, but not ready for high end use. I have tried a few of them and also tried multiple upscale USB cables including the Audioquest Diamond and don't feel that it can hold a candle to AES/EBU or SPDIFF. My experience has been that they all sound artificial, either smeared or artificially smoothed over. Not necessarily a bad sound, just far from accurate sounding IMO.

How come some audiophiles use USB connections for high-res audio music? ...And they use high-end (jitter-free) USB cables.

High speed (3.0) USB sticks? ...Through a high-end asynchronous USB DAC? ...Not good enough?

P.S. From the link above don't forget to read all the comments too.

Yes, the comments are interesting. Cookie's comments were very interesting.

Us Audiophiles sure are a funny bunch. I can't believe the anger and hate shown by so many people. We are talking about a cable here.

I would have to disagree as when I set up my first server and compared it to my Esoteric CDP which was using SPDIFF connection I found the sound quality better from the server. I endded up selling my CDP and SPDIFF cable. I’m glad this is America and we can use what we want.

So true Mike, on some of these forums these people will get so crazy about a darn cable and argue like their attempting to solve world peace or something, it's get rather silly....Give me a good recording, I'll worry about my cables later, but at the moment I would rather listen to the music, relax and enjoy a nice frosty beverage.

I totally disagree that USB is inferior. Properly done, it is at least equal, if not superior to other methods. Implementation is key. In my own listening, I have not found any other connection type sound any better than USB.

" These are all USB DACS they do NOT have antiquated SPDIF inputs like other dacs. These are optimized and superior to the older SPDIF technology." - J. Gordon Rankin

Implementation is key! So true!

Some of my best recording/professional friends (me included, among musicians and music lovers and audiofiles) are using USB technology to clarify their ears and purify their souls. And the high resolution music that I got from it (176/24) is totally invigorating!

The Abso!ute Sound's writer of that article, Alan Taffel; is he all there?

Can you put 1,536kHz/128-bit inside a USB conduit?

While I don't have a dog in this fight, but I noticed all the musicians I've worked with over my time used optical/spidif. Just sayin, that's what I have seen. Perhaps there is uber expensive USB stuff that does the job well, great. (I personally have no need of it).

IMO The Absolute Sound's assessment of recordings' sound quality is even worse than their assessment of equipment quality, and that is poor at best. There have way too many instances where I have done the same comparisons they have and come to opposite conclusions.

^^^ This.

The reviewer doesn't have a clue about tech.

Period.

+1+1

Agreed. It's only tubes or vinyl that someone should have to be physically restrained from killing someone else over.

cheers,
