Dawn of the Planet of the apes:

Rather than ending I think the movie begins with the Humane Society disclaimer:

“Every animal was harmed during the production of this movie!!!”

I have never been able to get people, usually girlfriends, not disposed to sci-fi to like it. And even if they like one picture, they point go back for more.

While some sci-fi can be just fun, the movies that resonate in time have some moral or sociological depth to them, Forbidden Planet, The Day The Earth Stood Still and the original Planet of the Apes. Still others, including Alien and Aliens don’t have that subtext and are great movies.

Dawn of the Planets in a fun movie, that, to some, may pretend to have a political sub-text, but I found none. This is a darn good adventure film for the sci-fi enthusiast, and I doubt if it will convert any others.

The film opens, ten years after the last film ended, evening the apes with mankind of domination of the planet. It is shown in a montage that 90% of the human race was wiped out due to a plague. They even have the real President talking about it, I guess 90% of the world did not have Obamacare!

I have heard some people talk about gun control being an issue here and I don’t see how. 90% of the population is gone and you need to protect yourself from talking and attacking apes. This is a silly context to place on this movie.

The real star is not Andy Serkis as Caesar, the “head” ape, but the special effects. They are fantastic here, like they were when I first saw Jurassic Park. You did believe that these apes were real. That’s important because they really humanize them here, they care about their friends and family. And despite that a war between the species breaks out.

I hate to say this but as I have seen more and more of the apocalyptic Earth movies, I am less excited and a little bored by many of the action sequences or scenes of total destruction. You kind of know what is going to happen. And I am also tired of the little seeds that are planted to prepare us for the sequel.

But putting those quibbles aside, it’s a fun movie. Oh, and don’t waste your time with 3D, it’s too dark that way. You see more of the incredible details the regular way.
