DALI Epicon 2

I had a chance to listen to the Epicon 8's on Monday at Design Audio Video. Holy smokes !! They were really impressive, I plan on bringing them home for a demo in the next week or so.
Electronics were the new Musical Fidelity Nu-Vista 800 integrated amp, and the sound of the 2 together was outstanding !

Exciting Mark! I asked Jeff Dorgay at Tone about a few speakers I'm looking at for downstairs and he recommended the Dali Epicon 8's. I heard the 6's at David's and was very impressed. Love the looks and build quality too.

Hi Mike,
While I have not heard the Epicon series, I do think Dali speakers are seriously underrated/under appreciated. I used to own the Dali Euphonia MS4 speakers which were pretty special. I honestly feel their hybrid tweeter gets you pretty close to the Raidho tweeter. May be there is an Epicon 8 in my future!
Anshul

Thanks Anshul. I sold my Spatials tonight. GREAT speakers, love the efficiency, the sweet tweeter, the adjustability and everything - but the open backs weren't a favorite of someone who must be obeyed.

I'm looking at Dali Epicon 8's, Focal Scala V2, Revel Salon 2, Harbeth 40.1 and a few others. My wife loves the looks of the Focal Scala V2's (I know, surprised me too) and she likes the looks of the Dali Epicon 8's (in all black).

This is for the family room.

I figured that the Spatial Luminas are not going to find favor with too many spouses. It is a pity as I am sure the sound is to die for.
I am not surprised by the preference for the piano black finish in the Dali Epicons (which will look classy). I also think the gloss walnut finish looks sharp (at least in photos).

Mark....Most curious of your impressions. Dali have offered me the same invitation. The Epicon is a "comeback" for Dali. It is a 100% in-house manufacture (including drivers).

As a Dali Grand owner, accepting such an invitation could probably lead me to acquiring the new flagship set (Epicon 8, vokal, 2 x Epicon 2).

Bye bye D3 Hello to Epicon8 ? ;)

Mike , as a previous owner of the Revel Salon 2's I will only say that they have a wicked impedance curve so you need to bring plenty of watts and current to the party . They also need space around them , I don't know how big your room is. And as far as WAF is concerned, they're pretty monstrous. I'll put in a vote for the Joseph Perspectives & the Gershman Grand Avant Garde's - small footprint speakers with a very grown-up sound that plumbs the depths.

Shodhan

Shodhan, can you please expand on your last statement. I don't understand your analogy. Thanks.

Your experience with Epicon 8 is welcomed for us prospective buyers. :)

Dali Grand are essentially the same dimensions (footprint) as the Epicon 8 with the same power rating. Currently they are approx. 750mm from back wall. I have had good results at 500mm too.

I would see these speakers as a dead ringer replacement.

Thanks Shodhan. I've actually owned the Revel Salon 2's years ago when they first came out and I've owned the Revel Studio 2's as well. Paired with warm sounding amps - especially tube amps like big REF250's or 2301's - they were outstanding. I have a hunch with the Hegel, they would be outstanding as well. 3D without SPL limits.

My room is 45' x 15' x 13' ceilings.

I'm really down to the Epicon 8's (I heard the 6's at David's) or the Scala V2's (I've heard twice at shows for what that's worth). Something else might sneak in there too....don't know. The salon 2's with Bryston 28 SST2's (which I just acquired yesterday) could also be killer. Just not sure stacking two big monos in the family room would go over well.

I'm really thinking Epicon 8's (after being so impressed with the 6's) and the NuVista 800 (I love the thought of a tube/SS hybrid in an integrated) would be it.....but something keeps saying "Scala, Scala!"....maybe that's my wife in my ear. :)

Hi Steve, I have absolutely nothing to say about the Dali's - I have no experience and am venturing no opinion. I thought this was a thread about possible replacements for Mike's Spatials. My point was that if WAF is a key variable here (which appears to be the case) then a small footprint speaker which nevertheless meets any reasonable audiophile sonic standard might be in consideration . I simply offered two examples of that . There is no analogy in my last sentence - simply a description , since I wan't comparing them to anything else.

WAF shouldn't be an issue. They are beautiful looking speakers & will perform well in Mike's room given those dimensions.

Steve, I'll let you know what I think after I get them home. I will be comparing them to my D3's, so it should be interesting.

Hey anyone want my Epicon 8s? I'm moving to a smaller place than I thought I was, so I'm going to a pair of Epicon 2s and a sub. Good price, like new!!

I use a pair of Epicon 2s and a sub--an awesome combination. Plenty of deep bass, superb clarity/transparency, and wonderful imaging, all while taking up minimal floor space, which definitely improves the WAF in my home!
