How do you keep track of the hours you put on your carts? do you care? i realize some preamps have counters (lucky you) for the rest of us i'm interested in your rituals and methods.

When it's time to sell, the standard answer is approximately 500 hours of use. It's almost as standard as the "two beers" answer when a cop pulls you over and asks if you have been drinking.

Seriously, you probably have a good idea of how many LPs you spin per day or week and how much time that represents on average. Multiply that by 52 and you are probably in the ballpark unless you only drive your cartridge to church on Sundays. Some anal retentive types actually log every LP they play and the duration of each LP. How would you like to be friends with that guy?

That's pretty much how I do it and it's close enough. ;)

I hang a digital counter off the trigger out port of my turntable, so the cumulative non volatile reading is conservative. I have more pics on my system thread, link below.

im in the who cares category :) i stop keeping track when i feel they are broken in.(nice to know how long until they sound their best) use them ,enjoy them, dont worry about the hours. and yes when its time to sell "under 500 hours" in the ad.lol.

I'll remember that Steve. 😃

Sent from my HTC One.

I usually do have under 500. By the time I sell the table and cart. Lol but this one I'm running until the wheels fall off

the standard on a'gon seems to be 300 hrs whether its two years old or twenty. ive recently developed the memory of a fly, sad really since i'm not yet 50. I get lost in the music and if any alcohol is involved, all bets are off so I need to write it down. I'll keep a journal and so I wont embarrass you by calling me your friend, i'll do it once a week instead (from my feeble memory).

Hmm, what hours are we talking about? Hours for a still sell-able cart with stylus or standard hours of life of a stylus? I'm told carts can last practically forever if taken care of.
When I was shopping for my carts I have now, I'm told by everybody and their brother that the standard life of a stylus is around 1000 to 1500 hours depending. I just round it to 1000 hours period.
I keep track with a paper chart and pen. I also just take an average of 45 minutes per record (22.5 minutes per side). Not dead accurate of course, but it in the ball park at least.
I didn't know some preamps have counters, how sweet is that! I wish there was a universal easy to hook up hours counter!

I recently used a Hammond box I had laying around to hold my air pressure gauge and needle valve that I use with my Trans-fi T-3 tonearm. While I was doing that I put in an hour meter that I spliced in after the switch on the TT. Works fine it seems. Attached was a pic but I can't post images or links yet. Oh-well Humm, thumbnail seems there.

Does anyone know if any manufacture sells a stylus hours tracking counter or something that can be used as such that is easy to hook up to any turntable without requiring any re-wiring or engineering degrees?
I've seen preamps with this feature, but they are very pricey. I'm wishing for something simple and it can even be a little plastic gizmo or what have you.
I'm sure I've already made an error or errors on my printed log sheets such as forget to log one record here or there which throws everything off, but not by end of the world standards at least. (An hour here or there won't make a difference).
I have a feeling what I'm thinking of is unobtainable.

Just click a[h=1]STEELMASTER Tally Counter[/h]every time you play an album side which is about 20 minutes long.

I would have posted a picture, but I am new here and can't post pictures yet
