Chicago Netflix Subscribers to Pay More - Hollywood Reporter - The Hollywood Reporter

"People in the Windy City soon will be paying a little more to stream their favorite movies, TV shows and music.

Chicago has enacted a "cloud tax," which will tack on 9 percent to streaming services like Netflix and Spotify, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

It's an expansion of the city's amusement tax, which taxes things like movies and tickets to sporting events. The streaming provision of the amusement tax takes effect in September, and the city estimates it will bring in $12 million annually."

I agree, but it seems like everyone is looking for excuses to squeeze more money out of us.

That is just wrong the tax is wrong is what I meant . Land of the taxed to death

Just read this. That's just wrong. The money paying for these services has already been taxed. Well, we could say that about sales taxes too.

We aren't as bad as Europe yet...but this cloud tax is just wrong.

Cloud Tax/Amusement Tax. Serious? Faaaark. Outrageous! I struggle to rationalise any impact statement?
An evil tax that will surely encourage other tax hungry nations to take note and come up with a similar excise. Australia is brilliant at that!

MIke you ever rented a 99 cent movie from Amazon & was taxed 14 cents on it. Yep. It's a Florida thing. and then you have Netflix streaming video: Florida which does not have a sales tax on digital goods, imposes a roughly 54-cent state tax on Netflix subscription under its communications services tax. Ain't it great to be streaming.

Nope. Don't watch movies. I have rented a movie from Apple iTunes before, can't remember if that was taxed.

Florida also charges a Sales Tax and a Communications Service Tax on satellite television. It amounts to 10% of a monthly bill. The state of Florida has absolutely nothing to do with the service provided or any overhead in its infrastructure but they have no problem attaching taxes to it. Reminds me of the Beatles song "Taxman".

If you are like most Americans, paying taxes is one of your pet peeves. The deadline to file your federal taxes is coming up, and this year Americans will spend more than 7 billion hours preparing their taxes and will hand over more than four trillion dollars to federal, state and local governments. Americans will fork over nearly 30 percent of what they earn to pay their income taxes, but that is only a small part of the story.

As you will see below, there are dozens of other taxes that Americans pay every year. Of course not everyone pays all of these taxes, but without a doubt we are all being taxed into oblivion. It is like death by a thousand paper cuts. Our politicians have become extremely creative in finding ways to extract money from all of us, and most Americans don't even realize what is being done to them. By the time it is all said and done, a significant portion of the population ends up paying more than half of what they earn to the government. That is fundamentally wrong, but nothing will be done about it until people start demanding change. The following is a list of 97 taxes Americans pay every year...

"This political agenda spouting is way off base for this audio forum and is the kind of crap that drives people away. Put a sock in it." ---Dan

You are quoting a right wing lunatic who defends Creationism and thinks there really was a Noah's Ark. Pretty sure he is a birther too, and predicting Armageddon. The list of this guy's quackery is too long to quote.

I don't mind paying my taxes. Never did and I never complained.

Bruce.......Been waiting two weeks to throw that back at me, hey? No political agenda spouting here. It's not Snyder's politics I posted, just a list of common taxes. I credited the writer, that's all. Geez. I am only trying to have some fun with the thread. Your post seems more political than mine.

Furthermore, if you're happy paying your taxes that's just wonderful. You must be one happy camper. I don't mind paying my fair share of taxes either but wasting tax revenue is another story which isn't the topic of this thread.

Jim.......Your probably right but quite honestly I'm beginning to regret participating in this thread. I just put the list up after finding it in a quick Google search. Like I said, just trying to have some fun.

I think I've had about all of this thread's fun factor I can stand.
