I got thinking. Since Devialet chooses to use RCA to RCA s/pdif connection between their mono amps. Wouldn't it seem that they feel that the RCA s/pdif connection was best?

My rational -- Because if the left channel has the music input in whatever you choose and then that is daisy chained to the right channel via a digital connection that wasn't perfect, wouldn't the left and right channels sound different?

Or am I just thinking too much. :)

I could be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that Devialet selected the AES/EBU connection originally. What I've been told is that the stock Crystal cable between the Master & Companion is good, but there is better as well.

I'm going to be trying Lumin BNC out --> Neutrik converter ($10 on ebay) --> Devialet AES/EBU in a week or so to see if there is any improvement over Lumin BNC to Devialet COAX.

Great thinking Jock, I assumed that an AES-XLR between the two pieces would be better. I am pretty surprised how musical my D400 sounds. Zero fatigue.

Any bets who buys the Transparent Reference XL cable first for their Devialet D400? Joe or Mike:D

I bought a Shunyata Python RCA spid/f to go between the units and it's wonderful :exciting:

Did you try the cable that comes with the companion?

If so, how does compare to the Shunyata?

The thing I don't understand is that skimpy white cable with the 1/8" connectors - this is required when the inputs of the slave unit are activated (so that for example - you can effectively have two phono inputs or additional digital inputs) . What does this do ? Is it simply a control cable. Horrible if an audio signal is passing through this piece of crap

No, it just allows the units to talk to each other. No audio.

Did you try a different coax cable between the master and companion? The included crystal cable is good, but I was curious.

Not yet Mike , I'm going to trust the Crystal Cable choice for a while , notoriously long break-in.

The Crystal Cable that comes with the companion is not some $50. Blue Jeans special. I guess some people think it can't be any good because it doesn't look expensive like some other big thick audiophile cables. Crystal uses big conductors and very thin isolation.
