James, I thought you had mentioned in the past that the BDP-2 uses the same sound card as the BDP-1, so the units would sound the same. However, Ray says his BDP-2 obviously sounds better than the BDP-1. He has a side by side photo here, and the only thing that appears similar between the two is the silver module in the center. Is the sound card different in the BDP-2? Thanks.

Hi Bud

The sound card is the same. The only difference is the Mother board in the BDP-2 has 10 times the speed and 3 times the memory.

What is that black box on the PSU board for ? Is that a DC/DC converter ?

That is understood. I'm only surprised, that you decided to use the SPMS, only after you spend considerable amout of money on the linear PSU for the board.

As you know, the problem with the SMPSs is two fold - they inject the noise to the component they power and then back to the AC line, where it can affect other components.

The display, which noisy by itself, probably does not care about the extra noise coming from the SMPS, but other components may not be very happy seeing the extra noise on AC line.

As you probably know, Aurender went even further in their W20 server, where they implemented a battery PSU to drive the audio/usb part. The problem is, that the MoBo and the charger are still beeing powered by SMPS.

As Martin Colloms from HiFi Critic had discovered, simply plugging the Aurender W-20 into the same AC line as the rest of the system, makes the system sound worse. He speculated it is because of the noise from the SMPS. No wonder HiFi Critic review is the one missing from the Aurender website ...

It is also no surprise, that the new Aurenders all use all-linear PSU. No SMPS in sight (and for the S10 and X100 models, aftermarket linear PSUs are already offered).

This is one of those cases, were you realise there was a problem, only after removing it. Probably worth a try when working on BDP-3 down the road.

I've been in this hobby for 20 plus years. I've owned several Wilson Audio speakers, Parasound, PS Audio, and a few others. Let me just say emphatically that Bryston has the best customer service that I've ever experienced. I recently purchased a BDP-2 and had a few questions. I was put in contact with Gary Dayton of Bryston and he has gone above and beyond what I expected.

This is what all companies should strive for...the bonus is the BDP-2 sounds fantastic!
