So I've got a Synology 1813+ en route with a bunch of drives (for my music and movie collection) and I'm looking for a good battery back-up for the unit. I don't want to spend a ton. Recommendations?

Hi Michael,

For you and anyone else with a NAS, a battery back up or UPS is mandatory. File corruption when the unit drops power is very possible. A smart-ups APC is usually my first choice.

I've got a big APC unit (can't remember the model) that I've got two Synology NAS units plugged into.

I think you can get one that will be sufficient for less than $100.

Definitely worth it.

just did a search on the Synology website and for the APC smart series the following 2 are compatible. Not sure what compatible means tho? But it's got to be good - right?

APC Smart-UPS 750
APC Smart-UPS 1500

Dang

just looked at the smart series. They are quite a bit more than the other APC units

here are the other compatible units from Synology:

APC Back-UPS ES 350
APC Back-UPS ES 500
APC Back-UPS RS 800
APC Back-UPS XS 1000

Forgive the ignorance but I just ordered the APC SMC1000. I'm assuming it'll work and work well right? Didn't see the need to pay an extra $75 for the 1500.

Perfect!

Michael, it cost just penny’s compared to your killer system so a very good choice. Overkill is way better then underkill.

I prefer "just right" - especially when dealing with UPS'. Changing/moving/replacing them is no small task on your back. That SMC1000 weighs more per cu in than the Pass gear (and you have to replace the battery every 2 or so years).

With such a light load on the UPS, I bet he'll get 3-5 years on a battery, easy.
