Ayre Acoustics QX-5 Twenty Digital Hub

Welcome to the forum gtl, thank you for joining.

Hi Mike,
I have a couple of questions.
(1) Can QX-5 Twenty be used with a flash storage device with USB connection such as "thumb drive", Lumin L1, etc? In other words, you don't need a separate network player.
(2) Can it stream from Tidal?
Thanks.

I think Mike may currently be busy putting up room treatments  but I think I can answer your questions. The Ayre QX-5 Twenty can be used with a USB thumb drive for quick and easy file access, but not a full external hard drive. I had asked previously about this and Ayre confirmed it. Regarding Tidal streaming I found the answer for you in this review, which states: "Hook an Ethernet cable into the Ayre unit’s backside and you’re instantly up and running with Tidal, Deezer and (supplemental to the original press release) Spotify Connect..."

Thanks a lot, audio.bill. I mainly listen from thumb drives and from Tidal, so in my case, it seems QX-5 Twenty can replace my network player + DAC.

The QX-5 Twenty as a Roon endpoint is wonderful. I played around with it today. My QX-5 Twenty also has well over 500 hours on it now and with the super clock inside, it just sounds "right", very organic and relaxed.

Is anyone else using their QX-5 Twenty with Roon? To me, that's such a nice feature.

I have a QX-5 Twenty and recently got an Aurender W20. If I use the USB connection, will I be using the clock of the QX-5 synced to my W20? How about AES?

Strange thing is the clock output of the QX-5 is optical, which isn't compatible with the clock input of my W20.

I don't use Roon with it, but I've heard it with Room and it sounds great. Right now I use it with a rebuilt Mac Mini (by Steve Nugent of Empirical Audio). He optimized everything from Amarra to the SSD's to the Paul Hynes LPS which makes the largest difference. I've yet to hear a server sound as good and I've had most in the house or heard them at the stores. I may just get the Melco and use it as the NAS. Ayre uses the Melco for all their listening.

Now that I have the Vander Steen Quattro set up with my air gear, I hear even more from the QX5\20 that I've ever heard. I've heard it now in many larger systems also and I'm amazed at how musical it is while still giving you all the micro and macro detail. I swear for me there are only a few DACs and they cost much much more, sound better and not by that much at all. Pretty impressive device that does so much.
