Aurender N100 repair or replace?

Friends, my 2017 vintage Aurender N100H in my main system has had its OLED display screen die for the second time now (and the N100SC in my basement system has had this happen once as well). I sent the Aurender guys a note, and assuming parts are still available, I'm assuming they'll send me a replacement display that I can R&R on my own like I've done the last two times.

We really enjoy the Aurender interface and the ability to both stream and keep our personal ripped library onboard without needing a separate NAS. But I'm less and less excited about the robustness of the unit itself... Between the display dying every few years and the unit's complete inability to deal with sub-second home power dropouts (despite being on a large toroidal power distributor with enough capacitance that music from other sources just keeps on playing), I find myself less inclined to do another repair. So the question is what to do?

If I repair, it's effectively zero out of pocket and I keep what I know and generally enjoy. But what if I decide to make a change? I use a standalone DAC and don't really want to go to an all-in-one solution; I like the ability to mix-n-match the DAC to the rest of the system, and don't really want to pay for an included DAC that I likely won't use.

Is there anything on the market similar to Aurender's "stream and store, using a separate external DAC" setup? It looks like the newer and higher end Aurender models get rid of the OLED in favor of an LCD screen - are these known to be more robust? That might be enough to keep me in the family, but I'm very much open to other options here.

Budget is less than $10k, preferably much less.

N150? R&R though makes the most sense to me. Unless you’re going to step up to an N200 or what we’ve found is the brand new A1000 USB output to be killer….you may or may not use its internal DAC. Options are good!

The N150 seems to have the same AMOLED display I have now, so I don't think there's much benefit to that path (same failure). N200 is probably my starting point if I buy a new Aurender. Hadn't considered the A1000 because of the DAC but I'll take a look. Presumably the N200 or A1000 are a step up sonically from the N100/150? They (on paper) look to be more like a de-contented N20 than an upgraded N150...

I understand the frustration, but I'd personally repair it and get more use out of it unless unhappy with the performance.

This may sound like a dumb question what do you use the display for? I can't see my display so only use the Conductor app so I don't understand why the display would be important.

They are indeed.

That's a really good question! I honestly don't use the display for actual playback ever (the unit is in a cabinet). But for connecting the thing to the home network, they put up a code on the display that you have to enter on the app. I've had to reset the unit more than once after a power flicker, so if the display doesn't work, I can't see and enter the code, and the unit is a brick.

I haven't even thought about Auralic in years - thanks! The Aries chassis is getting a bit long in tooth, but it looks like they've done some upgrades lately. I'll take a closer look.

I admit that the Aurender app is a really strong draw. Maybe because I'm used to it, but it does seem more intuitive than some of the other devices' apps I've tried. Haven't played with Auralic's though.

The G2.2 was a completely new design and streaming engine introduced last year. I moved up from the earlier version in April. At them moment it's getting a "holiday season" discount. I've used Auralic streamers since 2016 and while I've tried other brands I always come back. Their app works for me. Plenty of reviews of the unit out there.

Closing the loop here: I elected to repair the N100H. The Aurender guys sent me a new display and PC board for a nominal fee (we're talking like $50 here...) since I'm well beyond warranty coverage. Physical install was straightforward. I ended up having to roll the firmware back to the factory load and then re-update to the latest for the display to be recognized (it's a new display and PC board, so that doesn't seem unreasonable). Back up and running like new!

I may still decide to upgrade to the N200, but there were some other unplanned expenses just prior to and during the holidays, so I'll circle back to that later on. If nothing else, the N100 is back to normal and I suspect would sell easily if/when the time comes.

Wow. That is just extraordinary service. Good on Aurender.
