Auditioning amps

Today I spent the afternoon auditioning the T+A A3000 HV with a separate PS3000 HV power supply and the Pass Labs X250.8.

First of all a general observation: I do have a hard time understanding how dealers expect to sell gear worth €12-25 grand if they don’t put in the effort to make their systems sound right. Due to the semi-optimized setups I could only guess what the amps are really capable of.

The first setup was a very large room with a Golmund pre, a Vpi Prime and a pair of Marten Tenor 2’s driven by the T+A grown-up version of the PA3100 integrated with Audioquest Niagara 7000 power management.

Overall the power amp with a 1 amps transformer + separate power supply with 1.2 amps transformer with 120.000 μF and respectively 240.000 μF power capacity delivered a much more controlled presentation compared to the integrated. This might actually be a nice combo to drive the S3 mk2s, have to let the impression settle a little bit.

What I heard was very nice detail, great dynamics and resolution and pretty good grip on the low end. Turning up Roger Waters’ ‘Amused To Death’ really made the room shake when power was applied a bit, while Diana Krall’s female voice characteristics and the nuances of her Steinway were delivered in a convincing manner as well. It was just a pity that the speaker setup was a bit suboptimal so that imaging and soundstaging were a bit off. And while the Martens are ok, I guess, I definitely prefer the more controlled Magico presentation at home. And my room setup is definitely better.

The second setup was a more like a living room setting with the system positioned diagonally in the room, so that speaker placement to the front wall was not equidistant and with a corner behind one of the speakers. Logically imaging was skewed and center image became more like a one third right side image.

The system was a Pass XP10 pre with the X250.8, an Aurender N10 and an Electrocompaniet SACD, plus a Meitner MA-1 driving Magico S5 mk1s and with some power management I was not previously familiar with.

The Pass X250.8 portrayed the typical Pass strengths in imaging and soundstaging with a nice and airy top end and good grip on the Magicos on the bottom end. Vivaldi, Ben Webster, Holly Waits, Rickie Lee Jones and Eva Cassidy were delivered with plenty of detail, timbre and punch. Unfortunately it was also very obvious that the smallest Pass pre is not up for the task to get the best out of the X250.8. Nevertheless I think this power amp could definitely also be a candidate for my setup. I am just a bit spoiled by the much better coherence of the S3 mk2s at home vs. the S5 mk1s and the REL S5 SHO enhancing the midrange in a pretty nice way.

Long story short, I won’t know before hearing the amps at home. The dealer setups were both a bit flawed, but good impressions of two great alternatives anyway.

PS: Sitting now at home listening to Eva Cassidy’s “Nightbird” I must say I do have quite good sounding system now and maybe should not touch it. But that’s just maybe [emoji3].

It is so hard to evaluate gear in audio shows and even dealer showrooms. I have taken several leaps of faith with different gear throughout the years buying unheard and luckily the research has paid off most of the time. Even when auditioned in properly set up rooms you are also being influenced by power management set up, cabling and other different items and they may sound so different when you get them home. I have had the great fortune to be located near Mike at Suncoast who has been very generous loaning out equipment to try. Consequently I have upgraded a lot more than I would have, had I been faced buying blind.
The choices are so many in the audio world and taste plays a big part. At the moment I am quite happy with the Pass Labs INT 60 with my newly arrived S3mk2 but Mikes offer to let me try different combos may eventually do me in. Now he is like the Gryphon Diablo incarnate lol

I've heard Marten a couple times, although it be at shows, I didn't care for their sound. Seems quite different from Magico, which I liked a great deal each time hearing them. So as you say, to get a fair assessment you'll either need to hear both amps on same system or bring them home.

Also, the T+A will be a different flavor for you than Pass or Ayre. With Ayre just going by comments on this forum as to sound, I'd really love to hear one of their amps. I'd also be interested in seeing what you thought of the T+A.

The XP10 is single chassis but really good. In addition, if it wasn't plugged in and ready to ge already in that system, or, unplugged/moved, it wouldn't sound it's best until about the next day, no kidding. It has no power button and remains on for that reason. I know there's better, just saying. I kept mine after comparing to a $10k Levinson.

Great insights Mr Peabody. I heard larger Martens in Munich this year and quite liked them. But obviously there was something off with this demo setup. It might just be that the dealer thought this is a 150K system and the customer will be interested anyway.

The T+A are indeed a different animal to Ayre and Pass, but nevertheless quite nice. Maybe a tad less warm in the midrange, but nice resolution. I maybe still miss some heft in the lower register, but cannot at this point say whether it was the system or setup. I typically prefer the first type, but yesterday also liked the Goldmund combo with the Martens quite a bit. I think equipment pairing is key.

As to the XP10, it is possible it had been moved or disconnected before the demo. Maybe that influenced the sound.

Great to hear your S3 mk2s have finally arrived. A big congrats! I hope you are enjoying them as much as I do mine.

When living at an arms length from Mike’s you’re definitely doomed. In no time you will be an Android walking around and uttering ‘Gryphon’ in regular intervals for no obvious reason. I am intrigued by their sound but just not a fan of their design.

Do you have a list in mind with the amps to try?

I don’t really have one, but am just testing amps I have found interesting over the years. So far:
- BHK Signature 250
- Pass X250.8
- T+A A3000 HV + PS3000 HV
- Audia Flight Strumento 4

I might also look into:
- Soulution 710/711
- Nagra Classic Amp

As mentioned earlier, I typically like amps delivering a good level of detail but with a tad warm touch. I nevertheless also liked Soulution this year in Munich, as I am also a big fan of good bass control.

I highly recommend you listen to the CH Precision M1. My system is composed of MSB Select II driving my amp via its pre stage and have been using an ARC GS150 to drive my Nola Concert Grands. Long story short, I have never heard my system sound like it does, this after only 12 hours of break in. I do not own this amp, am breaking it in for a friend until his studio opens, thought I heard the best of what solid state could deliver with the many other amps we tried, but this is just to die for. As has been pointed out, it is all about one's system, synergy, etc but this, IF you are considering the Soulution, needs to be on the list. A big plus for this amp is its latitude, with its ability to adjust gain, feedback, used in biamp mode, dual mono or stereo mode. Sound is incredible and I feel like a kid who just woke up Christmas morning. I need to also state, that I have also put Gobel cables into my system to burn in for my friend until he opens his studio and Gobel uses CH Precision so I am assuming the "synergy" I am experiencing has been well engineered.

Carl Marchisotto doesn't believe in solid state and designed these amazing speakers around tubes, but I have never heard these speakers despite owning them for 4+ years, till I heard them with this amp and wire combination. Of course the MSB Select II helps quite a bit and will of course expose every nuance of one's system.

Thank you for the recommendation, sounds like a great amp.

One challenge of course is there is not a very big market for amps in that price range, hence demoing is really hard. Just had a look and did not find any dealer in reasonable distance.

Yup, I hear you. I am lucky to be the "guinea pig" and "burn in" receptacle for my buddy till he gets his studio up and running. Looking forward to hearing his Gobel speakers as well but am enjoying the ride of these amazing products in my system for the time being.

While "lucky" as I have said elsewhere it is also a mixed blessing as hearing how good some of this stuff is compared to what you own often leads to draining the wallet. I haven't made a change to my system in years and have been extremely happy and don't change my gear easily. This amp and cables bring a new dimension that is hard to resist.

Well, looking up the price tag on those toys I know north of 100K reasons to resist.

Based on your criteria, you should add Vitus to your list. I went through a similar process to you - listening to as many amps at dealers as possible then getting a short-list of 3 to try on home demo. In the end, I went with Berning Quadrature Z's but these may not have the outright grip for Magicos.

Point well taken. Yup they aren't cheap. IF I decide to embark on any of it, the amp and speaker cables would likely be my first foray. I am really enamored with the stuff with the stuff but at the beginning of the evaluation period so will temper my enthusiasm with your well pointed our reason to resist!

Been already doing this for a while [emoji3].

Thx anyway.

So, a not so long story short and sooner than expected, it’s going to be a Pass X250.8!

This is however not a snap decision: I actually started to look for a larger Pass after having the INT60 in my system earlier this year. Along the way I wanted to check out some other alternatives, like the BHK Signature 250 (which I did), and the T+A HV power amp with the separate PSU (which I did), maybe the Audia Flight Strumento No. 4 (not fast enough), and maybe the Soulution 711 (no good opportunities to audition and it’s pricey) and also the Nagra Classic Amp (like the sound, but I guess I would need two of them).

The BHK was very nice, but not quite exciting enough; the T+A is great, but not punchy enough. I am sure the Soulution is great, based on what I remember from Munich. I might come back to that one, but it will take more time.

The Pass P8 series has this nice grip on the low end which I like and the great airy top end I enjoyed with with the INT60. So when I today got a much better offer on the Pass than I expected, also trading in my trusty Ayre, I immediately pulled the trigger on the sale.

The best part is, the dealer will hand-deliver it tomorrow morning. Yes tomorrow. That’s quick. More to come [emoji3].

Congrats and enjoy.

Woot! Congrats. 250.8 is awesome. A bit warmer than the 350.8
