Anti-skating?

As I was setting up my VPI table I noticed the manual mentions setting up anti skating if you want it, but suggested it (Harry?) was not needed and sounded better without it.

What's your thoughts?
 
I never used it on any vpi table I ever had. If you have issues it's better to just twist the plug on the junction box. But a level table should not need any adjustment.
I also never use the dampening fluid. Seems to slow everything down.

It sounds great, but I'm a setup freak (complete with some of the goofiest looking gear like my jewelers microscope and light!). I was able to get the VTF at precisely 1.75grams. I love the fine tuning capabilities.

Nice job!!! I actually tried to hook up the anti skate once on my
Aries and the little weight was twisted around and the tonearm would get to the last song on the album and start skipping back because it didn't have enough string. Really freaked me out! Lol!
Glad it's all working out , bet it sounds awesome!!!
 
There is a sonic benefit from getting anti-skate set properly, but it is indeed subtle and less obvious than VTA or tracking angle and such. I think better cartridges react to it moreso than lesser ones, so if you don't hear anything different and your cartridge is tracking fine then don;t worry about it.

Anti-skate and fluid dampening

Anti-skate is a necessary evil though some arms will need more than other (except linear trackers). Without going to deep, anti-skate provides a slight counterforce to the natural tendency of an arm to move inward due to vibration and the spinning disk. If you used a very good test record (or better yet, an oscilloscope) you could tell just how well you are tracking.

Fluid dampening does NOT slow things down. It smooths micro vibrations and oscillations in the horizontal and vertical planes caused by album imperfections, warp, etc. I had it on an AT1100 tonearm and it was pretty awesome...

I do all those things but there is NO way I could articulate them as well as that article...I give it an A (A+ would be if he included pictures too...lol)
