Album Provenance

For me the site is full of recommendations for music I haven’t t heard, regardless of format. 👍 So regardless of the format wars, it is beneficial!

the Nirvana comparo makes a great case for RBCD, the streaming services all used compressed files. It amazes me that people enamored with streaming don't seem to question the provenance of the mastering 'hack job' they are listening to. Its primarily why I mostly collect used CDs that get ripped to my server vs streaming services.

It's an interesting question, which source do streaming or hi-res download services use to rip/stream. I looked around fo Qobuz and didn't find much information as to how a source is chosen. Although I think Qobuz at least (I think Amazon HD too) offers multiple versions of albums, so you the user can compare if you're inclined. HDtracks, I don't think does that, they sell one version they've chosen to rip, at least the last I checked.

That said, I'd hope that high end streaming services like Qobuz and Tidal put thought into that, have people dedicated to making those decisions. While it might not be the one you would choose, I'd think they were being mindful of it.

If anyone has more info on how that process works, would be interesting to see.

How do the streaming services perform a hack job? Aren’t they ripping in all likelihood from the same source you are?

its self evident looking the DR graphs. Nevermind was recorded on analog tape, now you have to ask from what source (safety copy or 2nd 3rd gen) and which mastering house are the digital files from? (it was remastered different times). If the streaming services can guaranty they are using the best source--not saying they all do-- then why are we getting inferior dynamic range to even the LP?

Magic Vinyl vs Digital – One of the current question is: what is the best edition of an album, on vinyl, on digital, or both? Who never asks the question.

It’s early for this new site, but some interesting info on a few albums for sure.

Thanks for sending this out Mike. Excellent information. The lack of DR for the versions the streaming services use is disturbing. I listened to the new Adele on Qobuz and was not impressed. I have the vinyl as well. I have not listened to it yet but will be interesting to compare.

Mike, I finally got around to listening to Adele 30 on vinyl compared to Qobuz. Not even close. Vinyl she sounds wonderful, Qobuz is almost unlistenable in comparison.
