Boilerplate IMO

A bunch of 2nd and 3rd tier reviewers trying to come up with something to get the prime audio companies to let them get first dibs to review their products....
You can say anything but if u don't have the juice it means very little

The way in which people get their info on audio is fundamentally changing. Online magazines and YouTube channels are the future and this doesn’t mean print can’t also augment their offerings with new medium. But YouTubers in particular are not beholden to any direct advertisers since Google handles all ads for YouTube. You may see an add for car insurance when watching a review on an amplifier. An interesting new factor. Game changing perhaps.

Online and video can produce more believable content in a much more timely manner.

Any print magazine I still get goes right into the recycle bin. Can't say I really look much at online magazines either.

The world has progressed from static content to more interactive. Forums like this - when you can filter out the grouchy egoistic debating over endlessly recycled topics - can be a wealth of information. For me, YouTube is somewhere in the middle; depends on the content creator - how well they engage their audience and how much their audience engages with the creator and other watchers/contributors.

Speaking of which: is there any way to mute a topic so it doesn't come up in the "new posts" feed?

I hope legit audio magazines can survive online. YouTube has a dark side, those who run a channel are more interested in likes & followers than anything credible.

I didn't get a chance to open the pdf to see what these reviewers agree to yet.

"... Online and video can produce more believable content in a much more timely manner."

More believable to whom? Certainly not to me.

I don't find the online reviews any more believable than print; some far less so.

I find most of the videos to be ads, either for the products that run through the "review" cycle and/or for the producer of the video.

Further, how do you determine what is more believable anyway?

“We received the item back and we could tell it hadn’t even been opened.”

That’s who.

Seeing it on the channel. Hearing it on the channel. That’s proof. I get to also see the environment.

I disagree Mike. There is nothing I would believe from a YouTube review. The only proof is hearing it in person anything else is just poor substitute and waste of time. I don't give credence to anyone's opinion on audio gear (or cars) especially Youtube YO'YO's.

Another useful difference with something like YouTube is it's a bit more interactive. Consumers can interact with content creators, and with each other, in ways that are frustratingly more difficult or impossible with print media. I do get the visceral fulfillment of sitting in a comfortable chair with a coffee or whisky or w/e, physically holding and turning the pages of a quality magazine. But end of day I read for information more than I do for that experience.

And again, forums like this one are obviously all about interactions and sharing. Reading a one-dimensional review in a magazine just seems very archaic and unfulfilling to me now.

Fwiw I'm not a big YouTube fan, but I find I turn to it more and more for reviews. For specs and basic info, it's manufacturer website. For perceptions, subjective input, real life experience in real life situations, I come here and other forums.

Well, forming your own opinion from listening is obviously best. But YouTubers are not beholden to any particular advertiser. That’s huge. Seeing and hearing it on a channel, also gives you a sniff.

I think at the level you're playing, I'd agree with this.

i feel the same. proof of hifi gear performance is not possible from video. it might stimulate my interest to investigate more, but never any sort of decision. it's a data point. just like forum feedback.

the value of information is 100% variable. it goes from zero to somewhat valuable 'depending'. but video's are so unpredictable in terms of quality of the recording, and then you are limited to low rez. maybe with headphones it's a touch more real, but not nearly enough.

as far as the personalities and agenda's of the presenter, again, you can drive a truck though all the holes in the value of video feedback. it's mostly for entertainment purposes.

but hey; i have my own approach to vetting gear already that has worked. if i did not have my experiences i might look at video's as the best thing since sliced bread.

YMMV
